WHFB RPG Fifth Edition Streamlines the Old World Without Losing Its Teeth

The WHFB RPG Fifth Edition is shaping up as refinement rather than reinvention.

Cubicle 7 is keeping the game recognizably Warhammer. However, several long-standing bits of mechanical friction are being stripped away. The result sounds faster, cleaner, and still extremely capable of maiming your character. This is a summary of a community post found here.

Fifth Edition Simplifies Tests, Combat, Characters, and GM Tools

The biggest change is a more unified core mechanic. Tests still use percentile rolls against your Characteristic or Skill, preserving the familiar WFRP foundation. However, difficulty modifiers now adjust the resulting Success Level instead of changing the target number beforehand. That should make rolls faster while reducing those little calculation pauses that accumulate during a long session. Meanwhile, Gamemasters get expanded guidance, outcome tables, and clearer systems for common situations. Even knocking out an unsuspecting enemy now has a straightforward framework. Importantly, these rules support roleplaying rather than trying to mechanically define every possible action.

Combat remains properly dangerous. Armour can no longer protect characters from critical hits, so even apparently manageable fights can turn ugly quickly. Meanwhile, the old Advantage bookkeeping becomes Momentum. You either have Momentum or you do not, and it grants Advantage on many Tests. Additionally, players can spend it to activate Talents and other abilities. Resilience and Resolve are gone entirely, leaving Fate and Fortune as the main safety resources. Therefore, failure should carry more weight without requiring players to track several overlapping currencies.

Character creation remains focused on Species, Careers, Characteristics, Skills, and Talents. However, Careers are reorganized alphabetically, advancement has been revised, and random generation still rewards players willing to accept fate. Skills now follow the core rules more consistently. Talents also shift away from broad numerical bonuses toward specific, flavorful abilities.

Cubicle 7 has also folded popular ideas from The Winds of Magic and Up in Arms directly into the core rules. Furthermore, the Bestiary has been updated for easier use. Most importantly, existing adventures and supplements remain backwards compatible. Overall, WHFB RPG Fifth Edition looks less like a reset and more like eight years of Fourth Edition lessons consolidated into one rulebook.
