New Cryx Army Box Format Makes Necrofactorium Easier to Start

The new cryx army box format is a smart move for Warmachine.

It gives Necrofactorium players cleaner entry points and clearer expansion paths. However, this is not a rules reset or model replacement. Instead, it repackages the army into boxes that make collection planning much easier. This is a summary of a community post found here.

Cryx Necrofactorium Gets Three Playable Starting Paths

Cryx Necrofactorium is getting refreshed into the newer Warmachine army box format, following the approach introduced with Dusk Fane of Nyrro. Each box contains a self-contained force of roughly 50 points, which means players can actually get models on the table without solving a purchase puzzle first. That matters, because Warmachine is always easier to sell when the first box feels like an army, not just a homework assignment.

The three new boxes are Legions of the Dead, Lord of Damnation, and Wraithbinder’s Host, and together they replace the older Core Expansion and Auxiliary Expansion structure.

However, the models themselves are not changing, so existing Cryx players are not being stranded by the shift. Better yet, the recently released Mechanithrall Swarm Warden now appears in both Legions of the Dead and Lord of Damnation. Legions of the Dead also includes a new set of variant sculpt Mechanithralls, which should be available separately through Warmachine or local stores later. That is a nice touch, because undead factory horror always benefits from more shambling body variety.

Meanwhile, the new Boneyard Keeper 30-point Command set replaces the current Command Starter, giving players a smaller way to learn the army. Individual Malefactor heavy warjack and Raptor light warjack boxes replace the Battlegroup Box, and both include every available loadout.

Finally, the refreshed range is available to pre-order now and releases October 20. The older Command Starter, Battlegroup Box, Core Expansion, and Auxiliary Expansion are being discontinued once remaining stock runs out, so half-built collectors may want to check shelves soon.

Summary and Final Thoughts

Overall, this is a very player-friendly Cryx update. It keeps existing collections valid, while making the army easier to start and expand. However, the best part is the cleaner 50-point structure.
