I really hope that the game is going to be great, BUT this video is a fake as it can be. 90% of the video are cutscenes from Dawn of War 2.
Anyone who doesn’t know the game will think that’s how Eternal Crusade looks. EC is still in early alpha and all the cool stuff he mentionened might or might not be in the game…
Too many games have not held what they promised.
The video isn’t “fake” per se, it actually does indicate that a lot of the footage is taken from other sources. I think they are just trying to show off what 40K looks like.
But yeah, it may not be as cool as we hope for, but, it is still looking pretty fun so far!
I will definitely try it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it falls flat. The Warhammer MMO was really limited, although they did have some fun PVP elements.
I actually really liked “Space Marine.” Totally got to nerd out in that game and a bunch of my non-40k friends liked it as well. If only it was still supported…
My issue with “Space Marine” was the constant lag. I never looked into it, but I think the game was client hosted instead of server hosted. This made the game feel like it was completely one-sided since whoever was hosting and close to the host had better ping than anyone else.
In playing, it was my experience that the game sold way better overseas. When seeking other players, the largest (and usually nearest) playerbase to pull from is in Europe and the UK. To me, it seemed much of the lag came from being paired up with players so far away.
It looks like it will be a great game. But I do have some concerns, from a technical perspective.
They’ve stated that they want to run one persistent “server”, and everyone will connect to that. So rather than instancing the game, it’s all one world. That’s a great aim, but nobody has ever done that and made it work.
The first problem is that the more “action based” so latency is a huge issue. So if you situate your server in north america, then all the europeans will get a bad experience. And vice versa if it’s hosted out of the UK/Europe. (Spare a thought for the poor Australians. Our currency isn’t a payment option, and we would get like 250ms of ping. How are we supposed to pay money for this game for a founder’s pack if there’s not actually any indication that it will be playable here. With no guarantee of AU servers, there’s no AU playerbase. And with no AU playerbase, there’s no need for an AU server.
Their statement is that they want to see if it will work, then they’ll split it up if it doesn’t. By this stage in development, they should know if it will work, and they should be adjusting accordingly. The risk is that they won’t get as many EU sales, and/or EU players as they need.
Because at the end of the day, this game has to be REALLY good, because it’s subscription based.
BTW, if you want to play ork boys, then you don’t need to pay. At the moment, until they announce AU servers I’m not putting any money in. Even once they do, it will probably be too late for founder packs, etc. If they had announced it would launch with AU servers, they’d already probably have $100 off me. And 40k is super popular here. Space Marine and Dawn of War sold really well in Australia. Even though 40k play itself has dropped off a bit, there’s huge respect for the setting and for games in that setting.
Well EVE online kinda of does this sucessfully for I think 10 years now. They have 1 server cluster located in London for the entire world to play and you really have no issues with lag in the US. Granted EVE (500k in 2013) doesn’t have the subscriber base like WoW.
Now if we look at Warhammer Online, they had about 750k users in about a month. This was with Mythic making the game who was already famous for DAoC a major competition with Everquest. Till WoW came out. Warhammer Online now isn’t as popular as it was in its early post released months. This means people will be hesitant to even play this game devoloped by company (behavior interactive ) that has NO experience in MMOs. I doubt even with Square Enix supporting them as their publishers be enough to win over customers.
My prediction, SWTOR all over again. Whicj hold the record for most expensive MMO developed and highest amount of subscribers in 3 days (over 1 million). Then it goes F2P in less than 2 years.
I have played all these names except Warhammer Online. I have also played other F2P MMOs and EQ2. So, I been around the block.
EVE has other advantages.
You can design a game so that LAG is not an issue, by making timing less of an important issue. For example, homeworld 2 had a command lag of 500ms built into the game. Assuming your network lag was less than 500ms, you didn’t notice any change. Likewise, EVE isn’t a twitch game.
Now look at the videos of Eternal Crusade. Shooting in real-time, and blocking/attacking each other in melee, and using jump packs are all events that REQUIRE a responsive connection to the server.
Try playing a first person shooter, any of them, against someone in the UK… That’s the experience I’m talking about.
After having a good look at where EC is at and what it wants to do im not putting any money into. I seriously think it is going to bomb because of the technical limitations. Ive played pretty much all MMOs. I would like to get back into an MMO. I hoped EC would be it (after the original 40K MMO concept was dropped) however the lack of clarity around the founders packs, the cost of mere weapon skins (which you really cant see in the midst of combat) and the absolute necessity for local servers to reduce latency is going to see this game become another Warhammer Online: AoR. It is going to be almost totally PvP and therefore a niche market…..granted a potentially large niche market but as we have seen with other games it is not sustainable. It really does look like a cash cow for the dev’s at this stage – little more.

Can’t wait to PVP against Wave Serpant spam.
Haha, I want to play an Ork Boy!

Games not Names in my closing sentences.
