New Zerg Units: Zagara, Defiler, and Bile Launcher Expand StarCraft TMG

The newest New Zerg units push StarCraft TMG toward a much more technical style of swarm warfare.

Zagara rewards overwhelming numbers, while Defilers keep fragile broods alive through clever battlefield support. Meanwhile, the Bile Launcher brings long-range biological artillery and objective utility to the faction. Together, these additions make the Swarm feel less predictable without losing its familiar identity. This is a summary of a community post found here.

New Zerg Units Add Protection, Swarm Buffs, and Biological Artillery

New Zerg Units

The Defiler is probably the most immediately disruptive addition because it changes how nearby Zerg survive incoming fire. Rather than brawling directly, this 40mm support creature shapes the battlefield from behind the front line. Dark Swarm places a token that lets nearby friendly units make evade rolls against attacks during the Assault Phase. Size-one models also gain a +1 modifier to those rolls, which is excellent news for vulnerable Zerglings. Consequently, a cheap screening unit can survive far longer than an opponent expects. That protection also creates a wonderfully thematic setup for the Defiler’s next trick, Consume.

The Defiler can destroy a nearby friendly model to reduce the Biomass cost of its abilities. Naturally, feeding it a Zergling hurts much less than sacrificing a valuable Roach. That extra Biomass matters most when fueling Plague, one of the unit’s signature abilities. Plague uses a blast template and inflicts non-lethal damage across grouped enemy models. Moreover, spending additional Biomass increases the damage, so the Defiler rewards players willing to trade bodies for battlefield pressure. In classic Zerg fashion, even your own models become resources when the situation demands it.

New Zerg Units

Zagara takes that swarm philosophy and turns it into the centerpiece of an entire army plan. Unlike Kerrigan, who excels through individual combat and psionic power, Zagara makes other Zerg more efficient. Her Broodmother ability grants one selected bonus each round to units of a chosen size. For example, size-one units can improve their impact rolls during a mass assault. Alternatively, size-three units can gain TOUGH (1) on every armour roll. Because the choice changes each round, Zagara can adapt the swarm to the current board state. Infested Drop adds another layer by letting Zagara’s base function as an entry edge once per round. Therefore, fresh units can appear much closer to the fighting instead of slogging forward from the normal deployment area.

New Zerg Units

Her dedicated Zagara’s Swarm Faction Card pushes the army even harder toward numerical superiority. During the Combat Phase, an active unit that outnumbers its engaged opponent can trigger Scourge Queen. Its close-combat weapons then gain INSTANT and PRECISION (4), turning large broods into frightening melee finishers. A twelve-model Zergling unit surrounding one isolated target becomes much more dangerous than its basic profile suggests. If the Zerg are attacked instead, Instinctive Reaction provides an evade roll against close-combat attacks.

Reactive Creep adds still more durability by giving friendly Zerg standing on Creep DODGE (1) against every incoming attack. Zerglings may not need the bonus as much, but tougher organisms can become significantly harder to remove.

The Bile Launcher completes the wave by giving the Swarm a true long-range artillery structure. Players can deploy it anywhere within 18 inches of their entry edge. Thanks to Bombard, it can strike almost anywhere on the table without needing line of sight. Its attacks hit armoured targets especially hard and leave behind a Creep Tumour after landing. However, the attack is telegraphed by placing a marker during the Movement Phase. Opponents therefore get a chance to move before the bombardment lands, creating a useful area-denial mind game. Most surprisingly, the Bile Launcher is the game’s first structure able to hold objective markers. That makes it more than artillery, since it can contribute directly to scenario scoring.

Altogether, these New Zerg units reward players who combine sacrificial screens, Creep, reinforcements, and delayed attacks. Wave 3 pre-orders include Zagara’s Hero Expansion, the Defiler Expansion, and Zerg custom dice.

Final Thoughts

pre order

Overall, these New Zerg units make the faction feel broader without diluting its swarm identity. Defilers protect disposable bodies, while Zagara turns numbers into offensive and defensive advantages. Meanwhile, the Bile Launcher forces opponents to respect areas they previously considered safe. More importantly, all three additions reward sequencing and board control instead of simple stat advantages. For experienced miniature players, that should make Zerg turns considerably more interesting to plan and counter.
