This warmachine news update dives deep into one of Cryx’s nastiest corners.
The Dread Armada is far more than undead pirates. Instead, it is a collection of fleets with different histories, commanders, and methods. Together, they turn Western Immoren’s coastline into a very dangerous place. This is a summary of a community post found here.
The Dread Armada Brings Cryx’s Full Naval Horror Into Focus

Cryx spent centuries lurking beyond Western Immoren, where most mainlanders treated stories of undead fleets as sailor superstition. However, those scattered raids were never truly random. Toruk’s lich lords were carefully preparing the Nightmare Empire for larger wars, using coastal attacks to hide much greater movements. That history goes back to twelve pirate kings who submitted to Toruk and received immortality as his first lich lords. Therefore, Cryx’s naval strength has always been baked into the faction rather than added as a later gimmick.

The modern Dread Armada was overseen by Lich Lord Terminus before command passed to Skarre Ravenmane. Since then, Cryxian attacks have hammered ports from Khador to Cygnar and the Protectorate. The feared Black Fleet sits at the heart of that threat, crewed heavily by satyxis and led personally by Skarre. These ships carry unnatural weather with them, using fog and strange winds while transporting soldiers, helljacks, and supplies. Meanwhile, the Pirate Fleet is larger but far less disciplined, combining stolen vessels with humans, trollkin, ogrun, gobbers, satyxis, and undead crews. It also plays a major intelligence role through smuggling networks and pirate ports.

The Ghost Fleet brings the proper nightmare fuel. Its vessels regenerate damage, sail under unseen winds, and carry undead spirits who refuse to stay dead. Admiral Rengrave commands them from the ancient flagship Atramentous, and plenty of sailors would apparently rather die than be captured. Meanwhile, Gerlak Slaughterborn’s smaller Slaughter Fleet transports blighted trollkin whose battlefield plan mostly involves reaching the enemy and eating whatever remains.

Amphibious helljacks like the Deep Stalker make coastal assaults even nastier, emerging from the water before the fleet lands. Subtle it is not, but that has never really been Cryx’s problem.
Summary and Final Thoughts

Overall, this is excellent background for anyone following the new Dread Armada army. It connects Skarre, the satyxis, pirate crews, revenants, trollkin, and helljacks into one coherent naval war machine. More importantly, it makes Cryx feel enormous again. The raids are only the visible edge of Toruk’s much older plans, and the Infernal War merely delayed them.
