Both armored and unarmored infantry sets are on the way. Let’s take a look!
Hot on the heals of Gripping Beast announcing it’s upcoming closure, Victrix Limited, the relatively new and much lauded purveyor of Dark Age miniatures has announced two new sets. Armored and unarmored Infantry representing Franks and Carolingians from the 8th to 11th Centuries have been released. For those who don’t know, Carolingian Franks are the ones from the period of Charlemagne, who was crowned Emperor in 800 CE after uniting much of Western Europe. Charlemagne’s empire would become known as the Holy Roman Empire, and if you ever wondered what two Reichs came before the third, Charlemagne’s was the first.
From Victrix’s release announcement: “These armoured warriors can represent elite Carolingian infantry or dismounted cavalry. They wear a varied selection of armour, including mail, scale and lamellar, all of which are known to have been used by Carolingian troops. Weapons include stout spears, many with the distinctive cross guard below the spearhead, along with knives, hand axes and swords. Carolingian swords were highly prized for their quality, combining strength with lightness and excellent craftsmanship. Clothing typically consisted of a long-sleeved tunic with contrasting decorative borders, often worn with a cloak. Leg bindings were common, while contemporary artwork also depicts the distinctive Carolingian “tulip” style boots. With a few shield swaps, these figures can also be mixed easily with Victrix Saxons, Vikings and Normans, giving you even more variety for your Dark Age armies. They also work extremely well in fantasy games and settings.”
Both sets come with six identical sprues allowing hobbyists to build 36 miniatures. Command options are included on the sprues themselves, as well as a wide variety of head arm, weapon and shield options. Victrix is also showing images of their excellent sprue layout and model options. In my mind they are rivaled only be Games Workshop in this particular service to hobbyists.
