Embergard is wrecked by the Vermindoom, yet Nagash still wants payment. Meanwhile, Thanatek shows up to claim every bone he can carry.
However, he is not after ordinary scraps, but “truebone” purity. So, this new Underworlds warband feels equal parts mission and mugging. And yes, it comes with a fresh Rivals deck for extra scheming.
Meet the Bone Collectors and Their “Helpful” Friends
Thanatek is backed by a tight crew with nasty jobs. Tukhar and Sekhmor are Mortis Reapers, and they hunt targets like paid assassins.
Meanwhile, Xar-Tamok and Medeb-Ahk are Mornial retainers hauling caskets for bones and soul-stuff. Additionally, those caskets feel like the grimdark answer to grocery bags. Still, the vibe is less errands and more harvesting.
Flex Warband Tricks, Cadaver Tokens, and Raising the Dead
Thanatek’s Tithe are a Flex-style warband, so they can brawl or grab tokens. However, their best play needs planning, not autopilot aggression. Xar-Tamok and Medeb-Ahk have the Retainers runemark, so Thanatek can measure attacks from them. Therefore, your leader can stab from safer angles while retainers lurk near fights.
If a target is adjacent to retainers after a successful attack, you gain a cadaver token. Then, those tokens become your resource engine, since you also need them to inspire fighters.
Yet the real spice is Endless Duty, which can raise a slain Mortis Reaper. So, you may even “spend” reapers aggressively, if your token pile supports it. However, you can only do that once per battle round, so timing matters.
Nexus of Power Rivals Deck and Pre-Order Tease
Alongside the warband comes the Nexus of Power Rivals deck, also Flex-style. Consequently, it pairs naturally with Thanatek’s Tithe or other Flex crews like Borgit’s Beastgrabbaz. It introduces the covetous rule, which rewards treasure play and violence together. Meanwhile, covetous fighters get extra melee range while holding treasure, which is quietly huge.
However, your opponent can flip up to two treasure tokens after placement, so your plan can get messed with. Additionally, Pillage and Plunder players may love those flips for quick scoring. The deck also calls out plays like Close the Vice, Unearthed Treasure, and I Like Those Odds for tactical swings.
Finally, both the warband and deck are due for pre-order soon, and Embergard remains the best on-ramp box.
