Firestorm Bagration – Turn 2 Report

After an intense turn 1, the Germans are hard pressed but now able to bring their armor to bear. What effect with the German counter attacks have…if any?

Hi there, this the the next article covering my local gaming group’s battle through the Bagration Firestorm campaign, using a modified set of 3rd edition rules. You can see the past articles here!

For this round the Germans can launch attacks. The attacker is determined by rolling a die with the Russians winning ties and getting +1 to their roll. Here is the map at the beginning of the turn:

we rolled up a random number of battles for this turn with the result being: 9

Battle 1: German Attack into Ospovichi – German Victory

Leveraging the power of their heavy tanks the Germans drive out the Russians. Some lucky rolls vs the Russian planes means the siege of Bobiruisk is lifted, freeing the trapped Firestorm Train Unit.

Battle 2 – German Attack into Sumalina (Soviet victory)

Eager to lift another siege the Germans try to use their armored train as a battering ram across hte river. While some early good rolls give them hope, they are eventually driven back.

Battle 3 – Siege of Vitebsk – Soviet Victory

The first proper Soviet city battle sees the Germans overcome in a series of brutal bouts of hand to hand combat.

Battle 4 – German Attack into Berezina (British Victory)

Trying to leverage German success in this area the Romanians take over to try and drive across the river. Fierce fighting sees many casualties but the push is unsuccessful. We would late take this mission out of rotation as it is proving almost impossible for the attacker to win (0-4 in campaign and test games).

Battle 5 – British Attack into Gorki (British victory)

The Allies try to close the pocket around the remaining German forces on the eastern flank. Heavily outnumbered and out of supply there is not much they can do to resist.

Battle 6 – Romanian Attack into Slavgorod (Romanian Victory)

True to form, the Romanians decided to fight on both sides into the heavily fortified territory of Gorki. While the game gets called due to time (becoming a major quagmire (cavalry units don’t like wire). The Romanians win on accumulated points.

Battle 7 – American attack into Obal (American victory)

The Americans join in the fun and manage to drive the German forces over the river.

Battle 8 – Siege of Orsha (Soviet Victory)

The second major city battle of the round sees the Russians try to solidify their gains by capturing another city. While they have a lot of troops the lack of supply causes morale to collapse and leaves them unable to hold off the Soviet horde.

Battle 9 – German Attack into Berezina (German Victory)

The Germans bookend the turn with their second win in 9 games by driving the British out of Berezina ensuring Bobruisk is safe from Soviet attack. Again the Tigers and Stukas do a lot of the heavy lifting.

At the end of the turn, after reinforcements and strategic moves, here is the situation. While the Germans have suffered some serious blows they were able to hold the southern flank and reinforce the center for a possible push to relieve the long besieged city. Who knows what Turn 3 will have to offer?
