Wargames Atlantic has released their first plastic set for The Baron’s War and showed off painted examples of the next three sets. Let’s take a look!
The Baron’s War is a set of skirmish rules by Andy Hobday, distributed by Footsore Miniatures & Games. Footsore have a huge range of metal miniatures for this ruleset, covering not only The Baron’s War itself, but also the Crusades of the same period, which are covered in a game supplement as well. Wargames Atlantic recently started producing plastic kits for the period and have just released images of the current and upcoming releases. So let’s take a quick look at the period in question.
Civil war broke out in England in the 13th Century after a disastrous war with France and some pretty significant misrule by King John. Yes, this guy eventually became king after Richard the Lionheart died:

John was actually a decent administrator, but he had a habit of completely screwing over every person he ever met, which people didn’t like. His nobles got so fed up with him that they actually invited the French King’s son, Louis, to invade, which he did, and proclaimed him king at Winchester, though he was never crowned. Hilariously, when John died in the middle of the war, all the rebellious nobles deserted Louis (whom they had invited over, remember) in favor of John’s nine year old son, and ultimately expelled French forces from England.
To represent the armies of the period, Wargames Atlantic has made four multi-part, plastic sets. They are: Foot Knights, Foot Serjeants, Levy (peasants) and Mounted Knights:

The miniatures are sculpted by Rob Macfarlane and come with a delightful array of options. The Foot knights have a variety of hand weapons, shields and head types, as well as some two-handed options. Now we hear that the mounted knights will have all their arms and heads compatible with their dismounted counterparts for even more variety. The Levy box can be used to portray peasants with farm implements or bowmen, suitable for a wide historical period or fantasy settings. And lastly the Foot Serjeants will have the largest variety of options, able to be equipped with spear, sword, halberd and crossbows.
These are some delightful looking minis that I personally cannot wait to get my hands on. What do you think? Will you be picking up any of these kits? Let us know in the comments!
