Sunday Preview: New Warhammer 40,000 Starter Sets!

The Warhammer-community team brings us some new info on the new starter sets for 9th ed 40k!

It’s that time of the week again where we get to find out what shiny new miniatures, books and more besides will be available to pre-order next weekend! Let’s take a look…

Starter Sets

We told you they were coming soon! That’s right, the Warhammer 40,000 range is about to be bolstered by three awesome new starter sets, each tailored to a different entry level for maximum accessibility.

Recruit Edition

The perfect starting point for anyone looking for their first taste of Warhammer 40,000 (and a great gift for a younger person). With a few units (including a Character on each side), a gaming mat to play on, dice, range rulers and a Recruit Manual to guide you through the basics of the game, you can’t go far wrong. If you’re a Warhammer 40,000 veteran, with 10 Necron Warriors, 3 Scarab Swarms, a Royal Warden, 5 Assault Intercessors and a Primaris Lieutenant, it’s a great set for bolstering an existing collection too!

Elite Edition

If you prefer to hit the ground running, the Elite Edition offers the perfect upgrade, with additional units in the form of Skorpekh Destroyers and Outriders, led by a mighty Necron Overlord and Primaris Captain. Like the Recruit Edition, the Elite set includes a gaming mat and a printed box interior to serve as a terrain piece, as well as dice and range rulers. The Elite Manual will help you master the phases of the game, and a hugely expanded transfer sheet will enable you to easily decorate the power armour of your Space Marines once painted. What’s more, with 10 Necron Warriors, 3 Scarab Swarms, 3 Skorpekh Destroyers, an Overlord, 5 Assault Intercessors, 3 Outriders and a Primaris Captain, it’s nearly two Start Collecting sets in one!

Command Edition

For new and experienced players alike who are looking to start the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 in the best possible way, the Command Edition is the ultimate starter box. In addition to the same selection of miniatures as the Elite Edition, the Command set also features a fold-out, double-sided gaming board as well as a selection of brand-new, push-fit battlefield terrain to fight over. What’s more, the Command Manual includes a series of six missions, each designed to break down the phases of the game so that you can learn them at your own pace. When you’re ready to move on, the 184-page rulebook included in the Command Edition helps set you up for the broader game and makes deciding where and how you want to expand your game easy.

Paint Sets and Tool Kits

There is a new paint set incoming for both the Necrons and Space Marines. They include three brand-new, push-fit Necron Warriors with gauss flayers and Assault Intercessors respectively, each in distinct poses that are different to those featured in Indomitus and the three starters sets. The sets also contain six Citadel paints, a Starter Brush and a stage-by-stage guide to help you paint your models in the colours of the Szarekhan Dynasty in the case of the Necrons, or the Ultramarines Chapter for the Space Marines. These sets are also great options for more experienced hobbyists looking to add even more variety to their Necron Warrior and Assault Intercessor Squads, or to try out the new Technical paint that features in the Necron set, Tesseract Glow.

The Warhammer 40,000 Paints and Tools Set is the perfect supplement to either (or both!) of the paint sets. The set includes an additional 13 paints, many of which are the same colours as those found in the above paint sets, enabling you to continue your painting journey onto the models in the starter sets without running out. A handy pair of clippers (designed for carefully snipping off components from their plastic frame) and a mouldline scraper (for removing any unsightly mould lines) – essential tools for any hobbyist – are also included.

Expand Your (Battlefield) Horizons

The Warhammer 40,000 Command Edition Battlefield Expansion Set includes a fold-out, double-sided gaming board and a selection of 12 pieces of plastic push-fit terrain – both of which also feature in the Command Edition starter set. If you’re looking for a Combat Patrol battlefield, populated by the perfect amount of terrain, look no further. Similarly, this set serves perfectly as a supplement to the Command Edition (or another Battlefield Expansion Set) to expand the size of your gaming area and terrain collection to one suitable for Incursion-scale battles. Add another two and you’re all set for a full Strike Force battlefield, complete with terrain!

If you’re a fan of reading Black Library’s action-packed fiction, you’re also in for a treat, as three new novels will be up for pre-order next weekend.

First up is Avenging Son, which has the honour of being the first book of the exciting new series that tells the story of the Indomitus Crusade from its origins to the myriad horrors faced by its Battle Groups as they set forth from Holy Terra. This opening instalment to the Dawn of Fire series was penned by veteran author Guy Haley, and is available in paperback or as one of 2000 signed copies of the lavish special edition, the latter of which also includes a bonus short story “A Witch’s Fate”.

If you’re chomping at the bit to read the next thrilling chapter in the Horus Heresy’s climactic Siege of Terra mini-series, The First Wall is almost here. Gav Thorpe takes charge of the action as the Traitor force prepares to launch their main assault on the Emperor’s Palace. But before Perturabo can at last match himself against the defences built by his brother Rogal Dorn, he must first take the indomitable Lion’s Gate spaceport in order to land his mightiest weaponry.

Sinner’s Bounty takes us to Necromunda, where lovable rogue Kal Jerico is on the hunt for the mastermind of a Guilder armoury heist. But he’s not alone – Josh Reynolds’ latest tale of the underhive’s most infamous bounty hunter pits Jerico against the countless rivals who are similarly determined to find his mark, or the loot…

We’ve also got your chance to choose which two classic novels will return to print as part of next year’s Black Library Celebration. Keep your eyes peeled for the Reader’s Choice 2021 selections later this week!
