Hey everyone! Adam, from TFG Radio, here to talk about the exciting universe that is Warhammer 40K!
Well the new edition of 40K is finally here. Hopefully everyone was able to get their hands on what they wanted. I know I was able to get the things that I wanted and even some extra stuff for our show contests. Now comes the part where we all excitedly open up the boxes like it was Christmas morning in July. I immediately looked at the points section to confirm what I already knew. There seems to be a lot of Forgeworld units that didn’t get any point values. I wanted to confirm that the units that I had models for, and enjoyed playing, were no longer given a point value. After looking through the lists and noting what units were no longer there, I had to pour one out for one of my armies, Renegades & Heretics.
I have been playing renegades & heretics for a while. I first started playing them in 7th edition. It was actually a pretty strong army that had a lot of bodies but also had a lot of artillery. It included a pre-nerf void shield generator and sometimes included a Renegade knight. It was such a good, strong army. Unfortunately, in 8th edition they didn’t fare too well. They were overpriced and severely limited in what units they could take from the Astra Militarum codex. In addition, as time went on, the lack of any army specific stratagems really hindered how the army performed on the battlefield so they have since been shelved. My hope was that with the new edition they would update the army and make them a bit more viable on the tabletop. This doesn’t seem to be the case and it may actually look like the army will be going the way of the Dodo.
I do have an ounce of hope though. We still have to wait for the release of the new Forgeworld books. I am hoping that a new renegades & heretics army list is in there. If not, there is always the chance that they will either get a White Dwarf index article or even their own full blown codex. If any of those actually happen then they will finally have the stratagems, relics and traits they need to be a more competitive force on the tabletop. There are plenty of clues, and sprues, that would give me hope that this is happening.
If they don’t bring them back and they go the way of Legends, I guess it will be something I would have to deal with. I guess I could always just play them as regular Astra Militarum. Hey at least I will finally get access to all the cool stuff they have. Hopefully Games Workshop creates something for them. If not, because they may be working on something else, then I’m calling it now, Squats around Christmastime!
That’s all for this week. hope you enjoyed the article. Let me know what you think, and what units you hope aren’t actually left out of the game, in the comments below.
And remember boys and girls, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart
Was the R’Varna in there? I don’t have access to the rules (FLG hasn’t gotten them yet, and the app isn’t available on IOS yet).
My Renegades list is now a Genestealer Cult.
As many of my Cultists were old metal Delaques, I bought the new ones to build a Magus, Sniper, Nexos…
Some Goliaths became Khornate cultists on Frenzon (Aberrants) and the Squats plus Thudd Guns became Mortar Teams.
And my Patriarch is none other than the Primarch Alpharius.
Codex GSC reflects a Chaos Cult far better than the CSM one.
This makes me want to get a few limos from a third party and go for the classic cult with Khorne look.
Playing a Chaos faction as loyalists for a time has always been the emergency way out. I had a friend doing that for Iron Warriors back in 3rd, since they didn’t do demons and he got access t all the siege-ish tanks that way.
Two easily researchable facts about this from GW
(1) FW CODEXes are coming – I reckon they were due for release months ago, but delayed by COVID-19 which impacted FW more than the GW Factory/ Warehouse (they’ve only just re-opened)
(2) no models sold = no rules in GW Codex
and look at the new models we’ve had from Blackstone Fortress (with 40K rules) … much better than the older ones – I’d look out for a Renegades GW Codex at some stage
Why would they release new books months ago when the new edition just dropped? End Times, Psychic Awakening mass book sell then edition switch? Again? I would hope not. Also, they… GW… have already said that the new FW indexes would drop shortly after 9th. This still has yet to be determined.
No models, no rules… pretty much everywhere across the Citadel range anymore.
Whilst the new models for traitor guard, commisar, ogryn, and cultists are indeed great, the humans are too tall. They should not be the height of a new CSM. Old cultist height with new CSM height looks like they should. Masters above their lesser creatures. I hope, hope, that this means a Lost and the Damned style codex from the Eye of Terror. However, like everything Chaos… I’ll believe it when I actually see it.
>(2) no models sold = no rules in GW Codex
The myriad jump pack and bike versions of the Marine HQs disagree with this. I think what you meant to say was _for non-Imperial factions_, no model sold means no rules in the codex.
I got back into 40k with the “year of chaos”. I am so very hopeful they make renegades back. I remember the Lost and the Damned from when I was a kid and how amazingly fun that, admittedly weak, list was. Seeing the rogue trader cultists and traitor guard give me hope.
Until then I’m going to stick with my chaos and convert traitor guard into guard kill teams.
