Join us for a live interview on our Twitch Channel at 2:30 pm PST on Wednesday, February 14th with Marc Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games, makers of League of Legends and Alex Fennell as we discuss the $5,000 sportsmanship prize Marc awarded to Alex during the Las Vegas Open 2018!
During the Las Vegas Open 2018, in a contentious game of the semi-finals of the 40K Championships, Alex was on the receiving end of a legal but rather unsporting move that left him unable to win the game. Instead of himself behaving in a similar manner, Alex displayed exemplary sportsmanship and took the situation in stride. Marc, a big 40K fan himself, was watching the game on Twitch. He was so inspired by what he saw that he offered Alex a $5,000 sportsmanship award. Alex then turned around and pledged the money to a Children’s Hospital! The story doesn’t stop there though, Alex’s employer offered to match the donation dollar for dollar and as the story grows, more companies have become inspired by this display of generosity and have pledged their support as well such as Games Workshop, who have also pledged $5,000 to the Children’s Hospital! Read the article they posted on the topic, here.
Join us for this inspiring interview and to learn about how what started as an unpleasant scenario has blossomed into a massive charity donation and a shining example of sportsmanship in competitive play. The show starts at 2:30pm PST on our Twitch Channel, this Wednesday the 14th of February.
Marc Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games.
Alex Fennell, Competitive 40K Player and all around nice guy.
Reecius, your host!
And remember, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart!
Alex is a big player at a semi-local shop and I had the pleasure of watching his bright pink hello-kitty wraith knights in action at a high schools “nerd-fest” weekend event, and am proud to see his good spirit on display.
Further, to see donations go to the children’s hospital (of which I frequently due to a daughters severe asthma) I find myself even more impressed.
Big ups, guys. Big ups.
Yeah, he’s a good dude.
Really cool that something this awesome can come of all this! Can’t wait to listen in!
This really is fantastic stuff all round, just seen on Warhammer Community GW will be matching the 5k as well. Congrats to all of you for remaining level-headed, not demonising Tony, and making this into such a positive 🙂
Yeah, pretty awesome!
I need to share this story with my brother-in-law. He has a group he regularly plays League of Legends with. I don’t really play League, but still, before watching the interview, I had no idea that Marc first played 40k during the Rogue Trader era. I’ve never seen anything like this happen in this community. I’ve only been playing in tournaments for a year and a half, though. Something might have happened from before I got out of my local bubble that I’m unaware of. Amazing story all around, and really does show that for as unsavory as certain parts of this community can be, it’s not beyond us to turn a bad situation around in a positive way.
Yeah, pretty awesome, right? Turned into a very positive thing.
