Hi guys welcome to the road to the LVO 2018, in the second of this short series on my journey to this amazing event. follow my progress. Here is my (Aceface’s) full review of the event and how I got on.
And remember, Frontline Gaming sells gaming products at a discount, every day in their webcart!
Was a pleasure meeting you Aceface. Congrats on the success and thanks for the awesome review!
Ace of base, the Swedish pop group from the 90s, with hits such as “I saw the sign”, doesn’t hold up. Trust me, they’re terrible. Aceface on the other hand is great and the LVO also seemed great. Someday, someday.
They also have some inconclusive-but-troubling associations with the Swedish Nazi movement, whereas (hopfully) Aceface does not have any connections to Nazis at all. That’s a double win right there, my friends.
Hey Mate, Craig here from London. Awesome video, look forward to seeing more!
Congratulations on the result, and thanks for the detailed review.
I agree with the Hive Tyrants versatility and different ways to play with them in 8th comparing to the boring “gunships” they were in 7th. Still, it is a bit sad that they outperform every other MC in every aspect, with the M16″, WS2+,`BS3+, S4++ combination. Is not just on how good Tyrants are, but also on how bad (or at least overcosted) other MCs are.
Eh. The Carnifex (and Old One Eye, and other variants), Exocrine, and Tyrannofex are all perfectly good units in their own right, not to mention the Swarmlord and Trygon within the context of their niches. A lot more of the Tyranid MCs are decent-to-good this edition than they ever have been before.
I wasn’t mean they are terrible, and I was talking in general.
One Eye and ‘fexes are decent, but still not good enough to make it to compete with reaper spam. I don’t think they really need a buff, just a meta shift. Mawlocs are decent too, as they’re really cheap.
The Exocrine and the spray T-fex are good if they find their perfect targets, but they’re also too expensive at any other time. They are close to good, but too expensive to be that specialized. I believe those two are around 20-30 points overcosted.
The Swarmlord and the Trygons are in need some boost.
About the rest, some are too expensive (Toxicrene, Harpy), totally outperfomed by Tyrants (Maleceptor), or too harmless for starting (Tervigon, Haruspex, Hive Crone).
Those are my personal thoughts after playing all of them in at least a couple of games. Also, I didn’t saw any successful tournament lists don’t field any MC that’s not a Hive Tyrant or a Mawloc.
I would definitely agree that the “flyers” need help; they’re good at launching fast assaults, but don’t hit hard enough to follow through and are still a bit fragile for their cost. They either need better guns or better melee, because right now they’re not particularly good with either.
I think the Exocrine and TFex are priced fine, all things considered. T8 does make a surprisingly big difference and the Exocrone’s long range and high accuracy combined with lots of shots will give a lot of units nightmares. I think the only reason you don’t see it more often is because Hive Guard fill a similar role while being a bit less vulnerable to return fire- but if they didn’t exist, you’d see lots of people using the Exocrine quite happily.
Swarmlord enables an incredibly potent movement trick. He’s expensive, but so are Ghillieman and other high-tier buff characters, and he comes with excellent melee and a fair amount of other utility.
The Exocrine is not terrible, but still don’t makes the cut in most cases. You don’t see them even in lists without Hive Guards. T8 is decent, but 4++ in a T7 is what is really good. Tyrants bring less firepower against W2 or W3 models, but are more resillient, mobile, psychic and can have CC capabilities, while having access to better antichaff firepower. Even if Tyrants were nerf, the Exocrine will be a tier 2 model, just because they are expensive for being just a static fire platform, with 9 operational wounds.
Tfexes have some place in the meta with the spray, as they ignore shooting penalties, and can shoot decently even at low wounds. Not as good as a Tyrant, and still a bit pricey.
The Swarmlord’s movement trick is really potent, but it doesn’t make for 300 points. It can’t be seriously compared to girlyman, as he’s a targetable character, and doesn’t apply an aura damage multiplier, but a one unit delivery buff. If not a point decrease, the Swarmlord needs at least a couple more wounds, or a native feel no pain equivalent (non cumulative with catalyst).
