Another great episode! Hope you guys break down some more tournament lists in future episodes.
One thing I’d like to mention: You said that ITC favors MSU over Deathstars since formats will lean towards one or the other. I agree that MSU is definitely better to face than Deathstars. However, an unintentional side effect of this is heavily favoring Obsec. Specifically Battle Company.
For the armies that don’t have mass Obsec, it is all but impossible to contest objectives with the massed MSU on Battle Company in ITC missions. They can just park themselves on objectives and most armies can’t do much to dislodge them in time since contesting becomes almost impossible without having a lot of obsec units yourself.
This can also be as unfun as shooting at a Deathstar and not seeing any wounds go through. Sure you’re killing stuff against a Battle Company, but it’s not going to matter when you still can’t have the objective because a Rhino is immobilized on top of 1 or a lone marine is hiding behind a wall and holding the objective and you can’t run/turbo boost and take it away because you don’t have obsec.
The skewed favor towards obsec in ITC leads to CAD spam for non-SM armies to gain Obsec and leads to less diversity within lists (Scatterbike Spam is common in top Eldar lists). If Obsec wasn’t an issue I believe we would see greater diversity in lists while still favoring MSU.
It’d be great if Obsec could be limited to a certain number of units for balance purposes. Maybe if you have more than (just an example) 4 obsec units, you have to pick which ones out of them have Obsec before the game starts.
I agree to a point. ITC events tend to have a LOT of list diversity. ObSec is good, but it isn’t essential. If you look at the top 8 lists at the LVO, there was only 1 battle company player there. Decurion Necrons was in the top 8, and quite a few other armies that did not rely on ObSec. It’s good, but not too good.
I agree that ITC has a lot of list diversity. I’m just saying that ITC being MSU favoring, the lists with a lot of Obsec have an inherent advantage over those without even if they’re both MSU.
I know LVO had a good variety, but it’s been a while now and people are becoming more savvy. Not much has changed since then but Necrons have gone from top tier to average in the standard ITC format. Non Obsec armies winning now are winning not by contesting objective but by leveraging very specific powerful things about their codexes. Like Cyclopian Cabal, War Convocation and… Eldar. Because Eldar.
Maybe you’re right, the issue stems not from obsec but other sources. Things like disparity between codexes or too much free stuff being handed out, etc. Things that have been discussed ad nauseum. But I think it’s worth monitoring as we move forward towards LVO 2017. Just my 2 cents.
Space marines are just too strong right now because their formations allow them to spam with no restriction (Battle company) or to build super friends and throw literally 3-5 formations together they’d want to use anyhow… (it makes the 3 formation restriction pointless for armies like theirs)
Good points. The power levels of some of the recent supplements have disrupted the game quite a bit, I agree. However, look at the BAO, Brandon Grant won with a pretty basic Dark Angels army, and beat a lot of the armies you listed.
Battle Company feels over powered but it really isn’t. More and more people are learning how to play against scouting grav, and build their lists for if, and yes battle company tends to do well in Static primary, objective based missions (Crusade, Big guns) but against a good player/list builder (army doesnt matter as much here) it is often hard or impossible for a BC player to get first blood or first strike. At least without sacrificing mobility by taking a lot of pods. As a matter of fact I think every codex has access to a single unit you can start on the board in ruins that a BC can’t kill. Except maybe Dark Eldar.
After you deny that initial alpha strike you play to whatever the BC player is willing to give you, and hope your reserve rolls don’t screw you.
I would argue that the ITC missions favor Death Stars more than GW Maelstrom Missions do. There are less objectives on the board, which is easier for a death stars to handle. In addition it is easier to roll into kill a unit; which Death Stars excel at. In this way I believe ITC missions encourage more list diversity then at least the book format. If this is better or worse for the game is a matter of opinion.
Well said.
The angels of death book is Codex SM specific, but the card set allows all SM factions to use the new psychic powers in the reference sheet. It’s even on the website.
https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/600×620/60220101007_ENGAdeptusAstartesPsychicPowerCards02.jpg
Well, then there you go.
Psykers from SW, DA, GK and BA do NOT have the option to generate their powers from Angels of Death Supplement.
Only Psykers that have the Space Marine Faction, as stated in the supplement. The book is VERY clear on that subject.
If the psychic power decks decides who gets to roll on what, does that mean that eldar warlocks can roll on divination and telepathy too ? I says so on the cards.
Or that Primaris Psykers can roll on telepathy ?
I assume that the ONLY rules sources is your codex, and any supplements for it. And not decks of cards or whatever a website say. Even if it is the official Website.
If so, i could likewise claim that my stormtalon gunship has rules, as per the description on the website:
“The Stormtalon Gunship serves the armies of the Adeptus Astartes as both an interceptor and ground-attack craft. It is fast enough to engage all but the swiftest of enemies, and sufficiently well-armed to reduce the chosen foe to a mangle of twisted wreckage and ruined flesh.”
So my stormtalon has reduced this wraithknight to ruined flesh, remove it please.
GW could very well Errata rules for the above mentioned factions, but untill they do, per RAW, none of these factions can actually roll on them.
They might recieve new psykers in future, or future campaign books will let Mephiston roll on one of the disciplines, or Ezekiel will be able to. No one knows.
Maybe it is just a case of the typical GW answer:
“the powers are for faction: Space Marines only, but go ahead and have a chat with your opponent, and if he is ok with it, feel free to generate those sweet powers!”
The ETC have FAQ’ed so that other factions than SM, may roll on them, but they had to get the FAQ finalized before cut-off date, and probably figured that the non SM factions would contain errata’s for their psykers.
Maybe ITC needs to take a look at it, and do an official stance on the subject.
The cards say that Eldar have access to Divination and Telepathy because *some* Eldar Psykers have access to those Disciplines. It doesn’t mean that they all do. So what it’s saying here is that at least one Psyker each of BA/DA/SW/GK has access to the AoD Powers.
And where do i find out wich Eldar Psykers have acces to what, in the codex ?
Does it say anywhere in their respective codex’s that BA/DA/SW and GK has access to AoD powers ?
No.
Psykers generate the powers they are allowed to by their codex, or supplements as AoD. Not by some picture on the back of a card deck.
If the card deck is a rules source that allows this, why shouldnt eldar warlocks be able to roll on telepathy and divination ?
What does it even matter? Everyone just allies in a Conclave anyway.
Hahaha, sadly true =(
Good old battle brothers. What a flawed system.
I have to disagree, at least to a point. The AoD supplement only states Space Marine Faction, but it has no reason to note SW/DA/BA/GK.
In addition to the cards showing these other factions can use the powers, White Dwarf says the same thing. Using the other FAQ as precedent, rules provided in WD are valid considering the Iron Priest situation originally given by WD was confirmed in the FAQs.
Also, I’d you don’t consider WD as a rules source than stuff like a War Convocation could not be taken as a valid detachment.
Thunderwolves with veil of time HO!!!!
