Hello everyone Frankie here do discuss the hobby side a little bit.
Ive been having a blast putting my wolves together over the past few years. Every single guy is completely converted as you can see below. I think custom building the models is one of my favorite things about warhammer 40k. The models are incredible already and are quite easy to turn into something you can call your own. If youve never tried converting your minis I for sure recommend it because it is a lot more rewarding. Here are the wolf lords not done yet I need to green stuff tattered capes on them but have been kind of worried about messing up the models haha.
Big hammer? Yes please! Doesnt make sense but looks badass.
The two guys without shields will have shields on there backs once they have capes.
Here are the iron priests. I am really happy how these guys turned out and cant wait to see them with paint.
I like the new thunderwolf models they looks really good.
Yes that is a metal tech marine servo harness haha.
Now for those of you that have custom built models do you ever get intimidated once they are done and ready for paint? Because I know I am haha. Im not a very good painter which is why with how much time and effort I have put into building them I am going to have someone else paint them. The only downside to doing this is that it wont feel completely like yours and will kind of take away from all the custom work you put into it. How do you guys feel about this? Would you paint them yourselves even if you arn’t very good at painting? Or would you have someone paint them that you know will do a good job?
This is probably my favorite army I have and cant wait to start using it on the table. What do you guys think? I will make sure to get more pictures once the capes are done and such.
Looking good!
Thanks CaptainA youre the best
I like the Thunderwolves and am actually thinking about adding some to my Centurionstar, now that we can have 3 detachments. It’s gonna be a very funny list, with maybe only 200-pts of troops and a 1650-pt super-deathstar! LOL!
Lol only you Jim.
I am actually having the exact same dilemma, I just started doing a full range conversion for an army (since converting is my fav part of the game, and painting being my least) I am also not 100% on how I would feel with someone else painting them. On one hand when I am done and place them on the table I want everyone to obviously think they are as cool as I do. But would a sub par paint job take away from this? I know an awesome paint job would definitely add to it looking awesome.
In my line of work, I am in charge of creating safety programs and equipping the employees with ways to do the job safety. When a project is finished that I started all i really did was research the things we need and hold meetings and in the end I am not the one that actually put the machine or feature there (thats an engineer) but I can still look at it and say that its my brain child. I was in charge of it every step of the way.
I think you could look at it the same way. This whole army came from you. You used what skills you had and what resources you had to get it as complete as possible and in the end if you get it painted by someone else, its still your idea.
Thank you for the input I appreciate it and I have been leaning towards that as I really want them to look impressive. I just wish I was a better painter.

Haha legendary.
Hilarious. I use the glue for you, glue for me technique when cutting my models/fingers. Liquid Stitches Rule!
This is very true as well!
I think you have to go with the way that will make you happiest playing them. Everyone loves facing off against an awesome looking army but on the other hand the only way to get better painting is to paint more. But I can’t see it mattering to your opponents if you painted them yourself or not.
My favorite is the dude with the giant hammer, that is such a cool conversion.
“Now for those of you that have custom built models do you ever get intimidated once they are done and ready for paint?”
Always.
Yeah, every single time.
The way I see it, you can only get better! And who knows, you might be better than you think! Go for it! Plus if you ever win “Best Appearance” with them it’ll mean so much more if you painted them yourself.
I know whatcha mean. I have my favorite models, but I’m scared to paint them because i suck.
like I’m getting a Macharious soon, and I wanna make it perfect. It going to be awesome with a converted commander manning the gun, extra bits, I might even get some etched brass for it.
Thunder wolves *shudder*
Without a doubt these guys are hands down the toughest force i’ve ever faced. Yes eldar can murder you faster but at least if you somehow survive the eldar assault you can kill the panzies, thats not the case with TWC. When built correctly they are like an indestructible blob of death. Insane.
The models are mega wicked tho 😀
looking good frankie! Excited for when they finish!
great looking models! id definately let some1 else paint them. there are some great painters around :]
The poses on the models are really cool. Can’t wait to see what heads you choose for them. Personally I’d paint them myself. You can always give them a very basic paint job (maybe just one highlight). But if you want them to be a showcase army by all means have them done professionally. Your Dark Eldar are utterly insane looking… probably one of the coolest Dark Eldar armies I’ve ever seen… and I can see wanting your Wolves to look just as good alongside them on the shelf. Tough decision… but its a low model count army so if you have the time I’d try and do it yourself but there’s no shame in getting them painted if you don’t. 🙂
Thank you for your input Cavalier I appreciate it.
Wicked awesome frankie! It’s been fun seeing you at multiple tournaments and watching the DE progress. Excited to see the wolves do some work!
Yeah hopefully the wolves will have a good showing as well.
I 100% agree. I love converting my army but I absolutely hate painting. I am surprised you don’t just get your painting studio to do your painting for you. I mean don’t you get an employee discount or something?
There was an article on BOLS that I read recently that made a very good point. Do you feel bad when you call the handy man to fix a problem at your house that you would either screw up or have no idea how to do it properly? No? Then why should you feel bad about getting someone to paint your models to a standard you don’t think you can do yourself?
Plus as soon as cash is handed over you get to claim credit for painting them, as you did pay for it ;P
Haha I like that comparison and I always tell people I worked really hard for the money I spent to have my models painted haha.
I Like this logic!
I like my Wolf Lord better. ;P cant wait to see them on the table
With the Thunderdome coming along nicely you have to ask yourself, which one is Mad Mel?
