Draigo, the Libby, Loth, and the Cents will do what they do: Gate around and blow important things up; The Sicaran tank will be used to pop transports, wave serpents, and AA; The Dreadknights with the personal teleporters will TP around and blow transports and the such up, and get into fist fights with other monstrous creatures; The Terminators are to TP on a random important objective; the two 5-man squads of marines in Rhinos are for late game objective securing. Hopefully they’ll be ignored and the focus will be the rest of my army. I’ll probably put them in reserves so they can pop out late game. Loth will get invisibility and the Libby will try for Perfect Timing and Presience.

I suggest using apothecary backpacks from the SM Command Squad and paint them their standard white. You can always magnetize them for easy swaps.
FW apothecaries are perfect for this.

I think you misread the power field generator, it only actually works on the unit inside the transport, not the transport itself. So no more 4++ Achilles.

I stand corrected =)
I know it was kind of light hearted banter, rather than serious. But it was interesting to hear you guys talk about characters that are “hard to use”. Issadon is, I think, a really good (and obvious) example. Sure he gets D6 + 3 wounds before the game starts is really annoying, but considering what other options are capable of that he competes against, it’s certainly not a no-brainer.
I mean, he’s a chapter master with -1 A, -1 WS, a power sword, and a better shooting attack. He doesn’t have the mobility of a bike, the toughness of eternal warrior (or even an invuln save), or the ability to meaningfully hurt a dedicated assault unit. Melee, while much reduced, is a fantastic way to protect your units (especially a warlord) and to tie up enemy resources. Most heroes other than Tau, are built around their ability in melee.
A difficult hero doesn’t mean it’s hard to get it’s abilities off, it means it’s hard to capitalise on them. Zoanthropes aren’t a thinking man’s unit, because of their ability to massively fail to do anything.
What do you guys think are the hardest heroes to use successfully? Not hardest, as in they are just bad. But heroes that are genuine contenders, but you have to work to get value from. I feel like (prior to IE 13) many of the chaos heroes fit this bill. They were generally not super tough (no EW, good invulns, etc), slow, and assault orientated. A really bad combination!
I would hardly classify Lias as “hard to use”- he’s one of the best HQ choices that Marines have. His fixed warlord trait is arguably the best one in the game right now and he comes with a ton of utility abilities- Shrouded, penalizing reserves, free autohits before the game starts, etc; obviously some lists take better advantage of him than others, but he’s never going to be a bad choice.
I’m not sure what the distinction between “hard to use” and “bad” is in your mind. There are lots of the FW characters that are middling or even poor, but that just means they are what they are; there’s a lot of factors that go into whether a unit is good or not, even just outside the actual context of what their numbers and abilities are.
I agree. He is potentially ultra powerful, but can be very poorly used quite easily.
That’s a good way to describe it. He is hard to master but extremely powerful when you do.
Other difficult characters to use are those that function in a similar role as a support character that are a bit fragile themselves.
I reckon the news cities of death rules would go really well with my FAT mat.
