One of the aspects that good players of 40k use as an edge over other players is utilizing a good memory. 40k requires you to remember game rules, codex rules, miniature rules, as well as things that change in game such as blessings and maledictions. I know I have forgotten many key effects that my units had that could have saved them from certain doom or even won me the game. Key effects like Feel No Pain, Move through Cover, Morale Tests and many Psychic of the psychic powers to name a few.
I remember playing a game against a Tau player who forgot to roll a morale test and then proceeded to use that squad to overwatch my Space marine bikers and kill a model that prevented me from making a pivotal charge. It was a bit later that we remembered the morale test and you can guess it; the unit failed and wouldn’t have been able to contribute to that key overwatch. It is times like that where I know a reminder would have been great.
You can write down changes to your units in game on paper, but having a token our counter on the table next to the unit can certainly cut down on in-game forgetfulness. Like I’ve heard it said before, not one game of 40k is played perfectly, but having a tool like reminder tokens should cut down on our forgetfulness. Not all of us can be the world’s greatest 40k player, but we can all use a little help to make our games more about strategy and less about memory.
This is where the new Frontline Gaming Tokens come into play. This is a set of 7th Edition tokens for 40k that should help many players remember key changes and rules for their units. The great thing is that the pdf file is free and available through Frontline Gaming! Here is a how to article on ways you can utilize this great resource.
White Token Set
Blue Token Set
Green Token Set
Grey Token Set
Purple Token Set
Red Token Set
Step One – Printing
The first step is to download and print out the document. There are six different colors to choose from that should give you a good match from your army. I have chosen the green set to match my Dragon Masters custom Space Marine Chapter.
I would advise that you print them out on card stock as this will make them much more durable in play. You can use your home printer or take them to a printshop. My printer was down as of writing this so I just went to my local Fed Ex Office and had them printed out. It was only $3.75 for the three pages in color on cardstock which was a great price and only took a few minutes.
Step Two – Cutting
There are plenty of ways to cut these bad boys out with items like scissors or a straight edge and hobby knife. I personally stole my wife’s craft paper cutter that has a roller and razor blade that cuts very nice straight edges. However you go about it, I would suggest you take your time and not cut corners as this will pay out in the long run and cut down on mistakes.
Step Three – Mounting
This is an optional step, but I think it is one that you won’t want to miss out on as it will make your tokens last so much longer. The tokens have been created to fit snugly on top of a 25mm square Warhammer Fantasy base. I know all of you have been drug down to the deep dark pits of playing Fantasy with your friends only to see things fizzle and fade leaving you with a pile of square bases…well at least I have. They are also pretty cheap to come by so don’t worry if you don’t have any on hand as your local game store should carry spare bases and many bitz sellers have them as well.
I chose some leftover square bases and spray painted them with some Army Painter green to match my token color. Once they dried it was easy to use some white glue or a glue stick to attach them to the surface of the base.
Step Four – Play Time!
After that, all you need to do is use them in game! Place them next to the unit to help remember key effects and they should cut down on your in-game mistakes and make the game play smoother and more fun for both sides. Or you can throw them at Team0Comp members as they play to distract them and win! Either way you will be the envy of your friends and family with this custom token set as you march your way to victory.
The tokens can be downloaded from the community tab at the top of the page. If you see a token you’d like included, post a comment here or in the Frontline Gaming Forums. Thanks!
