Do you feel the Thunderfire cannon is now a liability in Drop Pod lists due to the full scatter of barrage?
No, not really. You just need to be careful about where you fire it and try to actually have LoS to your target so that you can make it more accurate. It’s still point for point one of the best shooting units in the game.
I hear ya, I’m running a pod heavy list later tonight with a TFC or two, and after seeing ole Calgar take a few shells to the face kind of re-enforced one of my hesitations to bring one when I expect to have an enemy flank surrounded. But like you said, choose the best target to reduce the chance of friendly fire.
The first thing I noticed about all the 6th ed marines type books is that they basic troops are so much cheaper. It has me salivating for the massed carnage that can be inflicted. Bolters arent crap when 3 guys are shooting but kick off a barrage from 60 marines and anyone short of a wraithknight or great unlclean one is going to feel the pain. If you dont think so stand around in front of a dark angels army with dakka banner and see what happens lol
Are tac marines really that much cheaper though? The return of veteran sgt as an upgrade rather then mandatory saves 10 points, but if you decide to go with both a heavy and a special you are back to about the same cost per unit. And this game showed the value in spending those points.
Don’t bother with anything beyond a special. The biggest problem with taking a heavy is that you want to use it. So you shoot that one gun and the rest of the squad cheers him on or you get in close and get down to business with bolters.
I think it depends. Drop Pod units, a Multi Melta can be awesome as you create a deadly fire-power bubble in their backfield. Rhino borne squads can get into position and then contribute while holding an objective. I think it just comes down to how you plan to use the unit and how much flexibility you want them to have.
For me it’s not that they’re cheaper so much as you have more flexibility in building the unit. You can keep them cheap if you want to. I like having the choice to beef up the unit or to keep them cheap if I want to.
I would say the centurions squad is too slow to dump the additional points of both special characters into it as well, that is the definition of the “kitchen sink and all the associated plumbing” and if that is the case then you shove that unit up fields as fast as their spacemarine inside spacemarine legs can move them, keeping their threat bubble as target rich as possible and hopefully forcing the opponents movement to reflect that they dont want to take even 2 turns of the punishment from this unit eraser. brutal unit sad it only got 4 effective rounds of shooting, reece was duck and cover boys 3+ doesnt mean s#!%
Yeah, no joke! That unit was pulverizing me, I had to keep my head down or just lose a unit a turn. It is dreadfully slow though, deep strike on this unit would be so useful.
yeah, the only way I can think of using them is with a librarian (preferably Tigerius) with gate of infinity. It’s risky ( you need to roll the power and there are risks in using it) but it drastically increases the squads mobility and they have so much fire power what ever they shoot at is pretty much dead (besides something like ork boyz, but even then you have so many shots that you are going to do some damage). and if you also have Tigerius roll forewarning, you have pretty much eliminated the units’s main weaknesses.
My thoughts, too. They really need a character to beef them up, Azrael is great for that as is Tigurius. They need to get close to hit peak efficiency, but then you run the risk of getting bogged down in combat. But holy crap do they hit hard.
Whats your opinion on the grav weapons? especially on the centurions? the latest post on spikey bits seems to think RAW means that serpent shields don’t have any effect as no pen is caused, any thoughts?
I have to agree that they don’t cause a Pen, it is a special effect the weapon has, so I feel that that is correct. They simply strip a hull point AND immobilize the vehicle.

horde marines!!!!
I seriously think that is one of the most viable ways to play them this edition.

I was thinking telekenisis would be great with them. Telekine dome and or gate would be good to have with them

Centurion squad + Tigurius with Gate of Infinity = win….for that game/match up.
With three powers and rerolls he has a good chance at it.
BDS
Yeah, that would have been brutal.
