BAO 40K Narrative Campaign Question for the Community

Hey everyone, we’re gearing up for the BAO 2013, and will have all the pertinent information up by the end of the month. Big Jim, the gentleman who runs the 40K narrative event, has a question about the structure of the event.

Hey Guys,

Jim here your friendly neighborhood narrative event organizer with a question to those interested in Day 1 of the BAO event.

The battles taking place on the first day are probing actions meant to test the enemy lines for weakness. I want to put forth two options for handling these phase of the event.

The first option would be to use the 40k skirmish game that I authored and was run at the past two Adepticons. Special Operations Killzone, is a refinement of the ideas that GW put forth in Killteams. Using Killzone will allow all players on the fist day to square off against all players from the opposing side. This event would use the 2 team format with Operation groups of 500 total points.

The second option would be to run the event as Combat patrol. Using last years Adepticon version as the basis for the rules, with the exception that the armies will have 500 point values.

Please post your preference below; we will collect votes until 18th of this month. Now I leave the choice in your hands.

Please speak up and let him know what you all think!

  1. I downloaded the Killzone rules and we play tested them at last week’s War Games day that we hosted. I had not played KZ before but heard about it on Second Founding and thought it sounded cool. We had fun and we have several new to 40k players that have smaller armies but very much RPG backgrounded so the units have names and purpose. One gamer marked two of his models because they did cool stuff.

Anyway Kill Zone was cool and would be a good option. The play cards concept is cool.

  2. I say both!

Infiltrators (kill-teams) do all the reconnaissance, sabotage, assassinations, shopping for tea and biscuits etc. Combat Patrols extracate the kill-teams, or take advantage of the carnage/confusion caused to launch raids. Just my opinion.

But if you twist my arm, or hold a gun to my head, I’d have to say kill-team was always my favourite.

  3. If your going to use the Adepticon Rules keep the point level at 400. Adpeticon Combat Patrol was once played at 500 and they modified the rules to 400 to avoid the “broken lists” that some armies can build at that level. I will be in attendance if there is a BAO Combat Patrol Event.

      1. Curious then why he feels the need to change it. Well as stated previously my votes in for Combat Patrol and for keeping it at 400. I think it really makes someone think about force org choices. I have a pretty decent Vanilla list I want to run even though I know the darn Space Wolves take the cake in being the most cost effective Marine Dex right now.

    1. I did not know that Combat Patrol breaks down so bad at 500 points.

Besides this is a narrative event, why on earth would people actively ignore that fact to get all beat face with their lists. That is what the GT is for.

So maybe Combat Patrol is not a good platform for the narrative event. Or I may have to add to the limitations.
