Re: Tau. Reecius jokes aside, I don’t know if NOVA is particularly suited to Tau, but ITC is probably notably unsuited to Tau due to terrain house-rules, progressive and kill-more.
Tau won loads of GW Heats and GTs, ETC-style tournaments, etc.. Any tournament using regular GW terrain (and terrain rules) and some Eternal War style missions with at least some end-game scoring missions sprinkled throughout the tournament, they probably perform a lot better and have been for over a year. Stuff like Mani Cheema’s 9x Broadside rampage from early this year probably would’ve never worked in the US and IMO, because of that, the strength of the Tau army in general is widely underestimated in the US because they struggle in ITC (comparatively, despite Richard Siegler, etc..).
Re: Eldar. I don’t get how (non-Mech)Eldar/Ynnari being bad as an army is “retributive justice” for old-Ynnari? People who won with Ynnari previously like Nick Nanavati or Alex Harrison or whomever moved on the second the nerf hit. (and same with Grey Knights presumably). The people being “punished” by sub-par rules for non-mech Craftworld, Ynnari (or Grey Knights) aren’t the people who play these armies for the tournament-winning capabilities. They are the people who love these armies and hang in there despite being “punished” for the tournament scores of other people who’ve long since jumped over to Caladiuses or GSC or whatever.
While I agree with your assessment that it is harder for Tau to win in ITC format vs. something like NOVA where they give up a lot less point and can choose end game scoring, they are still REALLY good in the ITC format, one of the top performing armies by far.
Hi Reecius,
Although they are strong in the right hands, they seem to have a mono build (top Tau players with a winning record had shadowsun, 3 riptides, tau sept & 25-40 shield drones), and on top of that their don’t even have a 50% win rate in both NOVA and LGT.
They are now mid tier at competitive events, and can really struggle if you don’t take the obviously good units. You sometimes see mech tau and the occassionly piranha but the core of the top lists is the same. When the codex has a meta list that is well known and taken, and yet doesn’t post a 50% win rate it doesn’t really deserve the label “REALLY good in the ITC format, one of the top performing armies by far”
