Frontline Gaming’s First Narrative Battle Report!

tartarus151st.1

Hey everyone, we here at Frontline Gaming are very pleased to unveil our first narrative video battle report!

This is something new for us and was a ton of fun to create. We wanted to explore the more light hearted aspects of miniatures gaming where we typically tend to focus on more of the math/tournament aspects of it. The thing is, we love the artistic and narrative aspects of tabletop gaming, too!

In this video, we have the brave forces of the Astra Militarum defending their planet from a Tyranid invasion! Will the hold out against the alien menace or will they be overrun?! Tune in to find out.

Also, please give us your feedback on whether or not you enjoyed the video, what you liked, what you didn’t like, if you could follow what was happening and what you would like to see additionally if anything.

Thanks and we hope you enjoy it!

  1. It was fun, but I didn’t really get a sense of deployment or even any model’s positions until like halfway through, It was kind of disorienting and difficult to follow. Aside from that though my buddy and I had a good laugh, so that’s something.

  2. I had a good laugh. It was nice focusing on the fluff and the narrative instead of super tactical commentary. My only critique would be some of the lingo. IE. Killing a Leman Russ. You don’t really kill a thing. Unless you give it the D. Then it’s killed dead, D-E-D, dead. :p. But despite that minor complaint it was great fun to watch. Especially the lone commissar going off to deliver the emperors justice to the bugs >:D. Can’t wait for more charismatic villains like chaos and dark eldar to show up.

  3. The intro was fun to show off the models, but it was felt like it dragged on a little too long. I think you could probably cut most of that and go through the lists more quickly.

  4. Thanks for the entertainment 🙂

    Was fun to watch. Thanks!

As for my feedback, a better overview of deployment and the overall movement/combat across the board would have been great.

I must admit, I still think the format of your original youtube batreps is my favorite and was what made me aware of all Frontline Gamings other contributions to the community 🙂

To me at least, they offered just the right balance of insight into the thoughts behind each players decisions, overview of what was happening turn by turn while still leaving room for some goofiness – all in about 20-30 minutes.

With the new production value of your videos, I can only imagine how good that kind of batrep would be now 🙂

    1. More tactical shots would help a lot to understand what’s going on, agreed.

And no worries, we will be making more short form video bat reps that focus on gameplay and tactics. We’re trying to broaden our offerings though, and show more than just tournament play.

  5. Really good, my only critique would be to use one voice for the narration and a different voice for the actions, example: narrator ” the AM vets advance” 2nd voice “kill them with the heavy flamer boys” but I still enjoyed it! Ps tell that “Trygon” from the beginning to hit the gym lol

  6. It was fantastic! Please with more!

My feedback aside from first half camera work.

I enjoy the short form style, big plus on not having to watch 1 hours + for story like others I have seen.

If you do missions/scenerios that you guys come up with yourselves, can you post em?

Will these be apart of short campaigns?

  7. I thought this was a lot of fun. I see in the comments that a lot of people want to see better pics to get a better tactical view but I disagree. I think you need to go more themed.

For example, for this match you could have taken pictures from only the Astra Militarum’s side of the table, trying to get a models eye view of the Tyranids coming through the jungle.

The step by step of the game play was a bit boring after a while. Hearing X killed X in the same voice got old.

If you have the resources, get a buddy to read lines of the unit being destroyed.

“Commander, this is Sargent Flannigan, the Tyrant just annihilated the Helhound sir and is banking towards your position!”

Alternately, you could do a whole report on a grid, or using Vassal to represent post battle overview.

“As you can see, the Tervigon class bug is capable of birthing dozens of termigaunts every few minutes as you will see here…”
“In a few moments you will see…ahh, right there, the Trygon just burrowed up from the ground right in front of the front lines. Once this creature gets it full bearings it will charge into the men and tear them limb from limb. Does anyone know of a possible solution given the battle at hand? Yes, the plasma guns, they will soon be turned on the creature reducing it to sludge. Well done…”

Anyways, perhaps I typed a little too long…
