Fun back and forth game! One small thing, I don’t think you auto-hit vehicles that stood still anymore, unless they’re immobilized.
Good catch, missed that.
Great bat rep, only thing I saw wrong was that in 7th vehicles are only auto hit if they are immobilized, page 78 brb, otherwise they always get weapon skill 1, even if they remained stationary
Yeah! Was gonna point that out too! Great game Raw Dogger , if only you’d take Yarrick, you’d be my hero!
Not sure but did you guys play with old hive guard bs? It’s 3 now 🙁
Yes, played it BS3, with all the skimmers I anticipate in the meta now and light transports, I think these guy’s will be making a comeback.
Agreed. MSU mech has me thinking about genestealers again too.
Yeah, and now that it seems that you can make a Broodlord your Warlord and he gets Synapse, too (6″) that is definitely appealing to me, too. Hmm….
I think he gets synapse only if he gets that warlord trait. I thought he just had it too but someone pointed out on dakka the FAQ is specific to the warlord trait that adds 6″ to synapse.
Also as an aside curious how you guys and others will rule psychers like broodlord and wraith-fighter that get a single power and psychic focus? Would be nice to toggle synpase on a broodlord in a pinch.
The BRB says if you only have set psychic powers those are the only ones you get per my reading of it. It would be nice to get psychic focus, too, though. Broodlords would be a lot better if they could get synapse in some way.
And yeah, good catch on the Warlord trait, I was reading it as a general terms kind of thing. Too bad, that would have been awesome.
3 Things: 1) RawDogger: Consider placing the Storm Lord more middle and moving it on turn 1. You would have dominated the center of the table and facilitated your late-game objective grabs. 2) Also for RawDogger: An Open-Topped Lord of War is a special thing; perhaps look at cramming it full of a souped-up CC unit (you can ‘hide’ power axes or something in IG yes?). That, plus moving toward the center seems like it would be a good combination. 3) Reecius: The LoS terrain is excellent. However, it really appears to be abused in the sense that, while it is 100% LoS blocking without a single window or door modeled into it, you can still just DT through it. Balance it out by making it impassible (used to be a thing) so that the units benefiting from its advantages have to at least ‘go around’ it.
That’s what I was getting a little bit annoyed about in the game was that it blocked my line of sight to him but he was able to just go through it. No risk, all reward. Also, I set up on my left flank and stayed but since I knew he had 4 infiltrating units due to his warlord trait and I was fairly confident that he would be setting them up behind that line of sight blocking piece of terrain. I definitely will try and be more aggressive in future games with the Stormlord but he was in my face from go.
He could also had tank shocked the gaunts with his mighty swarm- Stormlord. Superheavies, even chunky pieces of metal like Baneblade-variants, can move 12″ and still shoot like they havent moved at all. They also ignore Immobilized from terran (even if they lose hull points from it). That 1d6 S6 ap4 autohits could have easily killed the rest of the gaunts from behind the wreck.
Yeah I’m still learning the ins and outs of the Stormlord. I’m definitely liking it,though. Reece refuses to let a super heavy move 12″ and fire everything at full BS. He’s a little bitch, sometimes.
Lol, F You, Raw Dog! I HIGHLY doubt that the rules for super heavies were written to let them function as an uber fast vehicle. I will bet money that they intended for it to operate like a heavy vehicle that can move over 6″
Oh, really? I never really even though about that they only move max 6″ since rules arent exactly unclear about this. Then again my POW might be a bit biased because of one line of fluff from escalation Baneblade entry:
“Possessed of overwhelming firepower, exceptionally thick
armour, and a roaring power-plant that allows it to surge into battle with surprising
speed, the Baneblade is a truly deadly foe in any conflict.”
6″, walking speed, isn’t surpising. 12″ for a metal behemoth of that size IS surprising 😀
You are right by RAW, I am just being obstinate, I think. It just FEELS wrong, dang it! =P
Reece, did you take a grounding test after your flyrant perils’ed on the first turn? Rules for grounding tests state:
“If a Flying Monstrous Creature that is Swooping suffers one or more unsaved Wounds during any phase, it must take a Grounded test at the end of that phase.”
Makes it a little more dangerous for FMCs to cast psychics as if they get grounded they can’t charge, plus they’re pretty much dead in the water next turn.
I did take the test and passee. But thanks for pointing that out.
So Tyranids keep winning, all over the world and the internet (in 6th and 7th), but we’re going to keep hearing how bad they are…
Yeah, you are: Because you have to f’ing buy a SUPPLEMENT with ‘formations’ in it to win. Build a winning list out of the Codex as-is. Tyranid ARE bad, Tyranid + ‘Just a few extra dollars out of your pocket’ are not.
So tyranid players have to lose every game we play in order to be considered a bad codex? Have you read it? It’s terrible: terribly bland, terribly written (or 95% copied), terrible rules.
IF you buy three (3) dataslates you can have access to a handful of formations that exist outside the (former) FOC to keep your head above water.
Also don’t forget when you watch FLG batreps you’re seeing a couple of the highest caliber tyranid players making the most of their lists and strategy. Most old tyranid players have a lot more stuff in the genestealer, lictor, mawloc/trygon, hormagaunt, warrior department, units that have markedly suffered under the newer editions.
For every good unit or rule in our book there are 2 that you never see that are overly punitive and poorly thought out.
Sorry man I realize now I kind of unloaded on you and I didn’t mean to do that for sure. I just think folks should “walk a mile” as it were in tyranid player’s shoes.
The book can win, it can be quite powerful actually, but it is a major disappointment for me personally as I can’t help but think what it could have been. So many crap units in there.
But yes, you are seeing the glass half full in that they are not an utter failure competitively which is positive.
Fun report. I couldn’t agree more about the Nid artillery formation. I only have one game against it so this is more anecdotal than anything, but it was nasty. My opponent had another Flyrant and Exocrine as opposed to the Gargoyles, but I think I would prefer the additional mobility of the latter.
The previous poster makes a great point about the Storm Lord. I’m adding one to my Sisters for shooting and midgame counter assault. Who doesn’t love an assault ramp?
You’ll get him next time, RD.
Yeah, the Living Artillery formation is not as fast, but it packs in more hard hitting MCs. Now that Harpies and Crones got the nerf bat, I think the Carnifexes and Exocrines are the more appealing choice.
The Warriors have been surprisingly good. I talked a lot of trash on them, but as a relatively reliable backfield synapse unit that does decent damage with their Barbed Strangler all game but draws little to no return fire, I have actually been quite happy with them.
It does kinda bite that the formation warriors are no longer ‘troops’ in the objective secured sense. Its a bit of a nerf to alot of the tyranid formations (especially the ones focused on troops like endless swarm).
Yeah, but ObSec isn’t the end all be all of the game, IMO. It helps a lot for sure, but I find that it is a much bigger deal for transports like Rhinos that can tank shock than for infantry.
I’ve been running basically the living artillery formation warriors (3, 1 with a BS) prior to the dataslates coming out since that’s mostly what I had from previous tyranid releases and I’ve found it useful for pinning heavy weapon teams or some such. At first they were ignored, after some luck on my part now they get insta deathed much more frequently.
I can only imagine the full formation. I’ll have the exocrine coming in my next order from you guys 😀
The twin link is the secret sauce. It makes the units so much more reliable! Biovores become pure death to light infantry.
We’ll be happy to hook you up in your next order!
so close.
I’ll get him one of these days! The trick to beating Reece is you have to obliterate him early in the game because he always finds some tricksy way to position a model or other bs to win at the end of the game.
You should make house rules that everytime Reece does something that counts as “bullshit” (like rolling way too many saves), you’ll have to offer him a drink.
That way he probably cant make any sound tactical decisions at the end of the game 😀
Alcohol: my greatest weakness! lol
Or milk. Make him try to drink a gallon of milk during the game.
the comment at the end was priceless…
Didn’t Reese get First Blood by killing the Wyvrn? Not that it mattered in the end.
It was in a squadron. =)
Nice battle report but the conga lines through walls you can’t shoot through seemed a little desperate. Also if the line breaker was applied right…note to self…re-read rules….
Line Breaker is a single model in the unit, not the entire unit. And we have always played that you can move through ruin walls, although every now and then we get folks saying that it takes them by surprise.
I really enjoy your battle reports, they’re very well done…but they’re definitely not good for my wallet. Man, that Stormlord. My Guard list is kind of similar to Raw Dogger’s (minus one blob and the squishy CCS, plus Yarrick, some Vets, Henchmen and Psykers) with two Russes instead of the Stormlord. I love my Russes, but even a BS 4 twin-linked prescienced Punisher gatling cannon looks puny compared to the Vulcan mega bolter. Plus you could embark a Henchmen squad with lots of heavy/special weapons and a psyker with psychic shriek on the Stormlord. Need…to..buy. Must…resist…
P.S: With terrain, we always stick to the rule that anything you cannot shoot through, you cannot move through either.
Reece, do run the fex’s as a squad or individualy?
Usually individually, but sometimes as a unit of 2.
