Admiral Rengrave Returns To Lead The Ghost Fleet of Cryx

The Ghost Fleet of Cryx is sailing again, and Admiral Rengrave remains every sailor’s worst nightmare.

However, this version of Rengrave is considerably more dangerous than the pirate legends remember. Sixteen centuries of slaughter have now earned him genuine warcaster power. Consequently, the Atramentous returns with an even nastier place inside the growing Dread Armada. This is a sumamry of a community article found here.

The Atramentous has haunted western Immoren’s coastlines for roughly sixteen centuries under Admiral Rengrave’s command. Even before undeath, however, Rengrave was already an exceptionally vicious pirate. His crew raided the Scharde Islands and mainland settlements, sometimes massacring communities simply because they enjoyed the violence. Eventually, that reputation drew the attention of Lord Toruk himself. The Dragonfather approached the Atramentous and offered Rengrave a wonderfully Cryxian choice between eternal service and complete annihilation.

Naturally, Rengrave chose service. Toruk’s flames then consumed the pirates and transformed them into seemingly indestructible revenants. Furthermore, later Ghost Fleet revenants swore allegiance to Rengrave and served the Nightmare Empire through him. Over the following centuries, the Atramentous became one of the Meredius Sea’s most feared ships. Wherever it appeared, vessels vanished, crews drowned, and survivors carried increasingly terrifying stories home. Rengrave also continued gathering souls and plunder for Cryx, which eventually earned him another transformation. Unlike mainland spellcasters, Cryxian undead can receive arcane power after death under exceptional circumstances. Consequently, Lich Lord Terminus selected Rengrave for ascension into a warcaster.

Only unusually strong, ambitious souls can survive that process, and Rengrave apparently qualified rather comfortably. Multiple lich lords also entrusted him with the secrets of thrall runes. That gives the old pirate access to powers far beyond his previous role as an undead sea captain. Rengrave technically serves Skarre Ravenmane, although he remains fiercely proud and independent. Previously, his superiors sometimes restrained his appetite for random slaughter and directed his raids toward strategic targets. Now, however, his warcaster status grants him substantially more freedom to spread destruction as he chooses. He can also add new names to his infamous register and expand the Ghost Fleet’s revenant ranks.

More ominously, the fleet now sails alongside helljacks marked by eerie light across their armour. That addition changes the Ghost Fleet of Cryx from a supernatural raiding force into something closer to a full warcaster-led battle group. For longtime Cryx players, that evolution feels appropriately sinister rather than simply nostalgic. Rengrave is still the murderous revenant admiral people remember, but now he has the tools to command heavier forces directly. The Dread Armada FronTier remains open until October 29 before its STL range moves to Warmachine 3D.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Ghost Fleet of Cryx has evolved rather than simply returned. Rengrave remains a gleefully murderous pirate, yet warcaster powers now make him far more significant. Meanwhile, helljacks give his revenant crews some serious mechanical muscle. For Cryx veterans, that makes his comeback feel like genuine progression instead of another familiar name returning unchanged.
