Late-war Soviet lists always feel best when they hit like a freight train. This new army deal leans right into that feeling.
It is built around assault guns, infantry, recon, and enough armour to worry German players. However, it is not just a box of big vehicles. It looks like a practical starter for Soviet breakthrough play. This is a summary of Battlefront’s article that you can read here.
Soviet Assault Guns Lead a Proper Flames of War Breakthrough Force

The Heavy SP Artillery Regiment Starter Force is about smashing prepared positions, then keeping the advance rolling. The background is classic Operation Bagration. Soviet scouts map enemy anti-tank guns and machine-gun nests before the attack. Then assault gun regiments assign targets and punch holes through the line.

On the table, that means supporting infantry, silencing guns, and bullying hardpoints. The box includes four IS-2 tanks, two ISU-122s, two ISU-152s, and four SU-76s. It also includes three BA-64 armoured cars, four T-34s, rifle teams, and a Komissar. Better still, it adds Maksim HMGs, unit cards, decals, and an A5 rulebook. That is a lot of plastic, but more importantly, it covers real battlefield jobs.

The ISU-122 brings direct-fire anti-tank punch, while the ISU-152 brings bunker-busting brutality. Meanwhile, SU-76s add lighter support and useful bombardments. The BA-64s give the army eyes, while infantry and HMGs help hold ground. Additionally, the Heavy SP Artillery Regiment can field ISU-122s and ISU-152s in batteries, with an IS-2 HQ. That makes the force feel themed, not like random leftovers. The old Soviet phrase “Not pretty, but thanks!” fits perfectly here. These machines are ugly problem-solvers, and Flames of War needs that kind of character.

Summary: A Strong Soviet Starter With Real Table Presence
Overall, this looks like a cracking late-war Soviet deal. It gives new players a clear direction and gives veterans more heavy metal. Moreover, it captures the Red Army breakthrough style nicely. The army has scouts, guns, infantry, and tanks working toward one blunt purpose
