Champions of Tabletop: The Kobold’s Lair, Crescent City, CA

Champions of Tabletop Spotlight

The Kobold’s Lair

In this edition of Champions of Tabletop, we head to the rugged coast of Northern California to visit The Kobold’s Lair. Owned by JD and Aisling, this shop has become a vital hub for a community that was previously a “gaming desert.”

📍 The Oasis: The closest comparable stores to The Kobold’s Lair are over two hours away. In Crescent City, this isn’t just a shop—it’s the heart of the hobby.
Inside The Kobold's Lair

A Place to “BE”

“Product sales are, of course, important. But being a place to ‘BE’ is more important. My favorite days are those when I have 20 people out front playing in a prerelease event and 8 people in the private gaming room… It’s noisy, busy, and glorious.”

For JD, the store is a way to share a 35-year love affair with gaming with the local community. The shop’s design reflects this: the floor is an open landscape of gaming tables, with products lining the walls, ensuring that play space always takes center stage.

Meet the Management: Billy Kobold & Crew

If the store were a character, it would be their namesake kobolds! The shop is “managed” by a colorful cast of characters:

  • Billy Kobold: The dapper, well-mannered sales-creature.
  • Bobby Kobold: Head of Acquisitions (we don’t ask where he gets the stock).
  • Beth Kobold: Head of Security.
  • Briar & Brandon: Handling IT and Freight.

Polymorphed Owls and T-Rexes

The Lair is a place where legends are made nightly. During a recent RPG session, a Wizard’s spiritual weapon (an owl companion) flew into combat only to be polymorphed into a T-Rex. It’s these moments of chaos and fun that keep the community coming back every single day.

Building with FLG Terrain

To support their massive RPG and Wargaming communities, The Kobold’s Lair carries FLG Terrain alongside other premium brands. Whether it’s Friday Night Magic or a nightly D&D session, the high-quality terrain helps transform their open play space into a truly immersive environment.
