At Frontline Gaming, we believe local game stores are the backbone of the tabletop hobby. They’re more than retail spaces — they’re gathering places, creative hubs, and third homes for players of all kinds.
Today, we’re excited to spotlight Mythical Market in Damariscotta, Maine — a growing community hub built on the idea that every town deserves a place to roll dice, crack packs, and connect across generations.

Meet the Team
Mythical Market is owned and operated by Forrest, with help from team members Ian and Taylin. The store was born out of a simple but powerful idea: every community deserves a friendly local game store.
“I always wished I had a FLGS closer to home while I was growing up. I was lucky enough to have one when I went to college. I always have had the want to start a venture of my own in this industry… I hope I can provide that community space that I would have wanted when I was younger as well as provide a friendly place to nerd out and play games with folks of all ages.”
After returning home from college, Forrest found himself in the right position to turn that long-held dream into a reality — and in doing so, create a true “third space” for the Damariscotta community.
Games & Communities
Mythical Market supports a wide range of hobby communities, including:
- Games Workshop Games
- Magic: The Gathering and other TCGs
- RPGs (D&D, Pathfinder, and more)
- Board Games
- Hobby Nights (painting, modeling, etc.)
They also host Super Smash Brothers tournaments, adding even more variety to their event lineup.
What Makes Mythical Market Unique?
Rural Maine fosters a tight-knit community — but hobbies often remain siloed into small groups. Mythical Market serves as a bridge.
“Having a third space where people who often keep their hobbies to their small group helps build that community and let people know how many other like-minded people are around with similar interests.”
It’s about bringing those groups together and helping new players discover that they’re not alone in their interests.
What Tabletop Gaming Means Here
“Tabletop gaming means cultivating a community and getting those play groups to play and mingle together while bringing in new folks to the hobby as easily as we can!”
Events & Organized Play
Mythical Market runs a full calendar of events, including:
- Weekly Magic tournaments
- Warhammer game and paint nights
- Board Game Nights
- D&D groups
They’ll also be running the first-ever Mainely Meeple Con at the end of February — a full gaming convention featuring large Magic and Warhammer events alongside an expansive board game library.
The Most Rewarding Part
Bringing new players into the hobby is what makes it all worthwhile.
“Watching a local high schooler crack open a Pokémon pack and open a Golden Charizard was one of the coolest moments the store has had so far. The pop off was so real and genuine.”
Challenges Along the Way
Like any retail business, inventory management and timing major releases can be stressful.
“Learning what product moves and what product sits on shelves is always a tough lesson to learn… There have definitely been a couple of ‘oh crap’ moments as a big release coincides with another big release and capital gets scarily low.”
A Diverse Gaming Community
While many hobby stores primarily serve teenagers and players in their 20s and 30s, Mythical Market sees strong engagement across age groups.
In a county known for its older demographic, it’s not uncommon to see younger players gaming alongside older hobbyists — reinforcing the idea that games truly transcend generations.
If the Store Were a Character…
Dragonite.
“My logo is a dragon illustration, and we have a pretty good Pokémon community, so probably Dragonite!”
Advice for Aspiring Store Owners
“Community is the name of the game. You have GOT to identify what hobbies your community wants and be running events nearly every day if you can. Butts in seats is the most important thing to getting your business to last.”
Mythical Market & Frontline Gaming
Mythical Market carries a variety of FLG products, including:
- FLG Mats
- FLG Terrain
- FLG Accessories (cutting mats, tape measures, laser lines, wet palettes, and more)
“FLG has helped me provide for my wargaming community by providing quality and affordable accessories!”
