The upcoming Warhammer Underworlds core set is about to launch, and with it comes an exciting future roadmap of releases. Two of the first warbands to join the fray after the core set’s release are the Jaws of Itzl and Grandfather’s Gardeners, each bringing a unique playstyle and aesthetic to the game.
Jaws of Itzl:
The Jaws of Itzl warband is part of the Seraphon faction, a fierce Strike warband. Once part of a grander warhost, they were separated from their Slann Starmaster during a cave-in and are now led by Kro-Jax the Aegis, a mighty Sunblood. Accompanied by Saurus Warriors Ro-Tak and So-Kar, along with a swarm of venomous Sotek’s Venomites, the Jaws of Itzl specialize in direct combat, ripping apart their foes with savage abandon.
Their playstyle rewards aggressive attacks, becoming more powerful as they shed blood. Their Savage Mauling ability ensures they inflict deep wounds, and the more they give in to their bloodthirsty nature, the more effective they become in combat. Despite being without the direct oversight of their Starmaster, they remain a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
Grandfather’s Gardeners:
On the other side of the spectrum, Grandfather’s Gardeners are a Nurgle-aligned Mastery warband. These plague-spreading disciples, led by Phlegmus Potbelly, aim to cultivate the Garden of Nurgle within the depths of Embergard. Phlegmus is aided by a grotesque retinue, including Plaguebearers Slunge, Maggoty Strewg, and Bug-Eyed Dripterus, as well as the pestilent rotfly Squort.
Their playstyle revolves around the cycle of life and decay, represented by a tracker that advances as damage is inflicted or treasure tokens are held. The warband thrives on the inevitability of decay, with their Reap a Harvest mechanic healing fighters and boosting their attacks as the tracker advances. Their Blooming Plague runemark provides devastating effects tied to the current state of the tracker.
Rivals Decks:
Alongside these warbands, two new Rivals decks are being introduced:
- Reckless Fury is a Strike deck that enhances warbands built for furious charges. It focuses on token manipulation, with cards like Catch Weapon and Get it Done allowing players to manage charge tokens, while objectives like Best Foot Forward and Unrelenting Massacre reward stacking charge tokens.
- Wrack and Ruin is a Mastery deck designed to control the battlefield through traps and strategic power cards. Cards like Confusion and Ominous Rumbling disrupt the enemy’s plans, while upgrades like Rock-splitting Tread reward careful positioning and use of terrain. Objectives such as Predictable End and Alone in the Dark reward smart, calculated moves on the battlefield.
Both warbands and their associated decks will be available for pre-order soon. Keep an eye here for more details on how to get your hands on these exciting new releases!
