Hi All,
For the past few months I have participating in an Age of Sigmar Path to Glory (PTG) campaign. As a Slaanesh player this has been fun as their rules are more fun in PITG then in the base game. I have a few thoughts on the system.
The Good:
On the whole I like the system. The Quest system works well, and its an easy way to get the resources you need. I like the veteran ability system as well as it keeps units from being too imbalanced, although it does seem to be a bit uneven. Armies that play in multiple phases are at an advantage as they can use more veteran abilities compared to those that just have fight phase abilities. However, this does prevent players from snowballing with their units if new players want to join in later, or for those who can’t play as frequently. I also really like the territory system, it makes it easier to create your own narrative and piece together your battles.
The Bad:
My major complaint with Path to Glory is that it makes heroes rather boring. They don’t get veteran abilities or crusade relics and thus don’t feel as noteworthy as other units. I think the balancing of faction abilities is wildly imbalanced. Some armies have rules that mean they ignore casualty rolls, or ignore parts of the game that they might otherwise enjoy (I am thinking of some summonable units not getting any traits).
The Ugly:
The only thing i have here is the casualty rolls system. After each battle you roll a die for each model slain. On the roll of a 1 these casualties carry over into the next battle. You can recuperate these losses but it is also a luck-dependent die roll. There are territories and faction territories that help with recuperation but these also require luck to roll. All this combines to make it possible you could get very unlucky and get hobbled early in the campaign.
Summary:
Overall i think this is a really good system that just needs a few tweaks. I am curious how it will change in 4th edition. Based on the 10th edition of 40k I imagine they will not alter it much aside from a few tweaks. Expanding the hero rules will go a long way to resolving my concerns, although this may open up more balance issues. What do you think? Do you enjoy the Path to Glory system? Why or why not?
