The latest edition of Warhammer 40,000, which hit the tabletops in June, brought a seismic shift to the game with simplified rules and a more streamlined gameplay experience. This overhaul also introduced a comprehensive set of Indexes, encompassing over 2,000 datasheets, including rare and Forge World exclusives, and full army rules for all factions in the game. However, such a monumental transformation was bound to have its challenges, particularly in terms of balance.
The Warhammer Studio adopted a patient approach, refraining from hasty alterations and instead opting to observe and analyze the game’s dynamics across various levels of play. Now, the waiting period is over, and they’ve unveiled the colossal Balance Dataslate. Additionally, we’ve got an exclusive interview with Warhammer 40,000 Studio Manager Stu, who delves into the reasoning behind some of these changes.
Here are some key highlights from the Balance Dataslate:
1. Devastating Wounds Reworked
Devastating Wounds no longer inflict mortal wounds; instead, they bypass armor and invulnerable saves. This adjustment makes Devastating Wounds more situational, especially impacting the potency of Aeldari units. For instance, you can’t obliterate an entire infantry squad with an anti-tank weapon in one shot just because you rolled a 6 to wound.
2. Stratagem Restrictions
Stricter conditions are now in place for reusing and discounting Stratagems. Overwatch Stratagems now require line of sight, eliminating Indirect Fire Overwatch. TITANIC units can’t use Overwatch Stratagems at all. Additionally, larger models (TOWERING) can be hidden behind Ruins if they don’t move next to them to peek over.
3. Faction and Army Rules Adjustments
Numerous factions have witnessed changes to their Army Rules or Detachment abilities. Genestealer Cults can no longer return units infinitely; they must roll dice to do so. Imperial Knights and Chaos Knights have seen balancing adjustments. Death Guard has gained a new aura ability for customization, while other factions like Leagues of Votann and Adeptus Mechanicus have received strategic enhancements.
4. Unit Limits and Points Adjustments
Certain powerful units now have capped numbers, including specific Adeptus Custodes and Space Marine Desolation Squads. Additionally, points adjustments have been implemented to fine-tune the power balance for each faction. Codex Tyranids, available for pre-order, has also received updates. For the most current points values, refer to the Munitorum Field Manual and the Warhammer 40,000 App, which now includes a QR code for easy access to updates.
5. Comprehensive Resources
You can download the Balance Dataslate and the Munitorum Field Manual, offering valuable insights and adjustments for players of all factions and experience levels. There’s also an updated Rules Commentary, featuring answers to obscure questions highlighted in red for easy reference.
This monumental update marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Warhammer 40,000, ensuring a more balanced and exciting gaming experience for players across the galaxy. Stay tuned for more thrilling battles and strategic triumphs in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium.
