Hi All,
it’s time to play catch up on all the great AoS releases that have happened since my last full review! Today we are looking at the Ogor Mawtribes (OMT) who have gotten a dizzying array of rules to pour over.
Army Special Rules:
The first rule of note is how to get “Big Names”. Whenever you add a Tyrant to your army you can give it Big Names through Renown. The model can get all 6 if it gets 60+ renown points. However, these names are earned and not bought. If you meet the criteria to earn a name, and have a free slot you can add that name to your unit. Most of these names are somewhat difficult to get (like the one that requires you to roll an unmodified 12” on a charge). This rule allows you to stack an absurd number of abilities on one unit, but you will be at the mercy of RNG.
Another special rule regards the reason we all love the OMT: their love of parties. After each battle you can return to your Glutthold and have a feast. You generate a certain number of points based on the number of units and models you kill and add 6D6 to that result. The rewards go up to 100 and you can get a number of useful perks including a free artifact and lots of Glory and Renown points. The only stipulation is that each time you return to the Glutthold you have to have more plunder points then before. Also, after each feast your points are rest to 0 (no leftovers!)
Quests:
The OMT get the standard four quest options:
- Break its Spirit: Allows you to get a mount trait on a Stonehorn or Thundertusk if you kill any enemy units
- Appease the Gulping God: Can only be selected after a major defeat. The next time you win a major victory you double your plunder and spoils points.
- Chosen by Everwinter: This is a fun, odd one. You cannot add a Huscard to your army during this quest (nor can you have one at the start). After each battle you roll a number of dice equal to the number of enemy models slain by the Grasp of the Everwinter trait. If any of these dice are 6’s you gain a free Huscard without paying Glory Points.
- Appetite for Destruction: Basically, you are hunting down an enemy encampment. After each battle you gain a certain number of clues based on the number of your units in the enemy’s deployment zone. After you gain three you can fight the unique battle.
Custom Mission:
This mission represents the OMT attacking an enemy settlement. Thus, you need to use the Siege Warfare rules. The defender must split their forces into two groups that are equal in size with half arriving randomly. The OMT must get passed the part of the board marked as the wall and raze four pieces of terrain while the defender tries to stop them. The winner gets 2D6 glory points and may re roll the dice if they win a major victory. OMT players may increase their plunder points by the number of victory points scored during the battle regardless of the outcome. OMT units also gain renown each time a terrain feature is razed within 3” of them.
This mission feels kind of slanted towards the OMT but I am unfamiliar with the Siege Warfare rules.
Veteran Abilities:
The OMT get a full table that is available to most units:
- Greedy Chompers: Ogor only. Heal D3 wounds
- Gnoblar Blast-keg: shooting attack where you roll 12D6 and inflict a mortal wound on a roll of a “6”. Wounds are doubled on units above 10 models.
- Thick Blubber: Ogor only. -1 to wound in the shooting phase
- Impressive Bulk: Ogro/Rhinox only. +3 to Trampling Charge.
- Bringers of the Blizzard: Beastclaw Raiders only. -1 to rolls for enemy units under the effects of Grasp of the Everwinter within 3” of the model
- Surprisingly Hard to Kill: Gnoblars only. Can only be hit on 6’s in combat
It goes without saying these abilities are all once per battle. However, they are all really good. You can even get some synergy with your quests if you pick the right ones!
Territories:
The OMT get 6 territory options to select:
- Gnoblar Shanty Town: Gnoblars recuperate more easily and you can lower the costs of upgrading other territories when this one is upgraded.
- Frostbitten Mountains: Increases your monsters and priests limits. Once upgraded you can also get free Yhetee units!
- Feasting Pit: Increases the number of dice you roll when feasting.
- Fighting Pit: Gain a renown point for a unit on a 3+ but take an injury on a “1”.
- Ruined Sky Titan Stronghold: Ironblasters and Leadbelchers become cheaper to recruit. When upgraded, you can get a free artifact or plunder points depending on your roll.
- Great Maw: Greatly boosts the Great Mawpot’s Battlebroth ability.
Conclusion:
There you have it! I think the designers have another great rule set here. These rules are fluffy and powerful with plenty of avenues for narrative play. This book has some of the strongest Veteran Abilities on offer which is handy for a book with a smaller number of units. The feasting mechanics are also a clever addition and they do a good job of balancing rewards with costs. What do you think? Are you enjoying these new Path to Glory rules?
