Competitive wargamers, Salty John from TFG Radio and LVO Head Judge here to further discuss some important news for LVO 2023 Terrain.
Yesterday we announced that for LVO 2023 the first floor, ground floor for you Brits reading this, on some ruins on our tables would block Line of Sight even if the door or window covering was missing. We got a lot of positive feedback on this change, but we also received some questions about which pieces specifically it applies to and that people wanted to avoid the “magic box” problem from the days of yore. We responded that everything would be spelled out in the LVO Player Packet once we have all the terrain figured out. However, I am happy to let you know we can show you what we have done so far so you can start to see how this is applied. In the images below, terrain marked with an “F” will be played as the openings on the first floor, that’s ground floor UK folks, are closed up even if the covering is missing.
The first thing you will notice is with our terrain pool, each player gets 1 “F” which will help them traverse the board and close ground-level firing lanes. This strikes a good balance between everything blocking Line of Sight 100% and making issues for shooting armies, and having everything completely open and making issues for assault armies; while working within the limitations of our terrain pool.
You will notice that the most problematic pieces for creating “magic boxes” are not marked with an “F” on any of the terrain setups posted above. This means that those pieces will use Line of Sight as laid out in the Warhammer 40k rules and are not going to be large pieces of terrain you can camp a large unit inside of and have them be nigh unassailable for the majority of a game. Sharp-eyed LVO/FLG event veterans will notice the absence of the Industrial and Robot City. These two are admittedly more problematic and we are working still to fix these, one of the fixes is those tables will be the least prevalent in numbers at LVO 2023. Last year at the LVO 2022 Robot City was rarely played on, as new terrain is built and designed those problematic sets are being phased out, but we can only produce so much new terrain each year.
Hopefully, this strikes a good balance for most players, addressing the concerns many people had over needing more LoS blocking without going about it in a ham-fisted manner and making the experience drastically worse for other players. Let us know what you think, and if you haven’t done so yet, please answer our General FLG Survey. This survey coupled with the survey to our event attendees from the 2022 events will be used to make our events better in the future!
Solid Balance. I like it where each person gets 1 piece like that. Don’t want to make it 2 per side or you get those lists that can just camp out behind terrain and score points.
Thank you, Aurelio took the lead and worked with several people to make this a reality. He deserves a lot of the credit.
How’s the feedback on player placed terrain?
