Hi all,
Today we are looking at the short, White Dwarf Path to Glory rules for the Cities of Sigmar (CoS). I can’t believe these rules have been out so long, has 3rd ed. of Sigmar really been out for over a year?
Army Ability and Quest:
As this was a fairly early release the CoS don’t get nay fun army abilities. As this will be remedied by the next battletome, which should also include a much larger overhaul. The quests for the CoS centers a hero on a griffon or black dragon model. If this model destroys any enemy units you get a mount trait (max of 1).
Upgrade Table and Territories:
The Cities of Sigmar get access to a pretty powerful and expanded veteran table:
- Cavalry: +1 Hit and Wound
- Artillery: Shoot twice on the first turn
- Aelf Units: Re-roll charges
- Duaradin: Ignore the effects of a spell
- Mounted unit with ranged weapon: can run and shoot.
It is important to note that you can’t use any veteran ability more then once per game, and only one unit can use such an ability per turn. That being said, all of these abilities are very strong. They will likely be one of your first choice for upgrades. I really like the artillery ability and you can still get value from having multiple units with this ability as you get a lot of options. The Duradin ability is also sneaky good as it triggers on your opponent’s turn allowing them to use another ability on your own.
When it comes to the territories:
- Stormvault: Basically go dungeon diving for an artifact of power after every battle. There is a risk of getting an injury to your character. Stormcast models get +1 to their roll (booooo stay in your own battletome!)
- Allied Enclave: You get three more allied units in your force. When you upgrade it you can give an allied Hero the Cities of Sigmar City keyword!
- Settlement: Increase your unit limit by 3 when upgraded.
These are some of the best mini-rules for a narrative force I have seen (40k or AoS). I think they are actually pretty fluffy given how limited they are. I think the territories provide some interesting mechanics and options for you to consider in lieu of overall army abilities. I am excited to see what their full rules will look like when released!

Its as if you had a great grasp on the subject matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from more than one angle.
