Hey everyone! Adam here, from TFG Radio, to discuss some of the great, and not so great, things about Abaddon.
We have now had a few weeks of Chaos Space Marines out in the wild. They have not been tearing up the scene as some other codexes did on their release but Chaos Space marines are making a good showing. Definitely much better that their 8th edition codex of the past. In case you haven’t noticed, Abaddon seems to be everywhere and in everyone’s army. If you have seen him on the battle field in any of your local tournaments then you know that Abaddon is a force to be reckoned with. I, myself, field Abaddon in every army that I build, especially since I have been playing Black Legion for almost 30 years. This week I will discuss some highlights, and one lowlight, so far while using him on the tabletop.
Kills Knights by himself
I may have talked about this before but I still find it hilarious. Whenever I play against either Chaos or Imperial Knights, Abaddon does not disappoint. The rule that only allows him to only take 3 damage per save helps with keeping him alive. Abaddon, for the most part, will easily kill any of the smaller knights in the army. Some people mention that his movement limits how far he can really go and that knights moves faster. The fact that Abaddon is still has the “Infantry” keyword means that he can Kool-Aid Man through breachable terrain and take short cuts through this terrain while knights have to go around a lot of pieces terrain. Abaddon can do enough damage to kill a large knight in one round of combat, so seeing a knight run away from him is not unheard of. His current damage record in one round of combat is 40 unsaved wounds.
Bounced off of Harlequins
Okay, let me first state that this was my first game with Abaddon, so it’s not my fault. I was still trying to figure out what to put in the army to complement him and seeing what worked and what didn’t. He did okay but was well below expectations for a model of that many points. The thing about Harlequins, however, really depends heavily on whether the player can make their 4+ invulnerable saves. not much I can do when my opponent is making those saves and even making even harder saves. It also helped that I had no interest in whether I won or lost the game and played as such so that energy could have affected my game. Yeah, that’s it.
Waded through a Salamanders army
It was fairly soon when Abaddon would redeem himself in the form of a Salamanders army. Once again, his ability to limit the damage he takes helped him wade through the army. During the game Abaddon ended up killing a squad of four Blade Guard, four Aggressors, a squad of 3 Eliminators, a primaris chaplain on bike, and finally an ATV. This took him from one side of the battlefield to another and he was left with 5 wounds at the end of it all. He was truly a monster on the battlefield. He does deserve the fear that many have of him but there are plenty of armies that can easily handle Abaddon, especially if he out by himself without any type of character protection. I will continue to use him in my games for the foreseeable future and hopefully get better at it.
