Games Workshop unveils the new upscaled version of the Vanguard Veterans and let’s just say the reviews are…mixed.

Now, I will say that my initial reaction was very much MEH. It definitely follows the trend from Games Workshop of taking an already existing model (Assault Intercessor with Jump Pack) and add a couple of different features and a bing bang boom give me $60 please THANK YOU. Throw in a tactical rock and baby, you got yourself a stew!
And yes, at first glance this model is pretty much an exact replica of the Assault Intercessors with Jump Packs.

Look at it closely, it’s not COMPLETELY devoid of detail. The new Vanguard kit does appear to have a bit more flair with a tabard, purity seals, a Crux Terminatus, and other armor flourishes.
The comments on Games Workshop’s official Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page have been largely negative. Here’s just a few of the hundreds of comments from the post.
Finally a loincloth on a generic jump pack marine!! I’ve been waiting forever for this! I hope they all have these. Can’t wait to kit out some death wing vanguard vets!!
looks like an assault intercessor with jump pack. Put some flavor to it like an aquila, a medal of the veteran a shield of something…
Wait, that’s literally just a jump pack intercessors with a different head option
Very boring, just a assault Intercessor with a loincloth
And of course, we have the memes.

Look, I get it. As a Blood Angels player I REALLY get it. Remember the Sanguinary Guard release? Yikes talk about a plain model. From a Games Workshop perspective I also get it. It’s tough to build on the classic design when the classic design went HARD.
I mean look at these guys. They’ve got RIZZ, they’ve got DRIP. Whatever the younger generation is saying now, THEYVE GOT IT.

With Games Workshop’s ability to create amazingly detailed plastic models it’s difficult for me to understand why they couldn’t just take the classic models and upscale them.
Now, I want to conclude this article by saying that we have not seen the entire Vanguard Veteran box set. There may be loads of weapon and armor options that we just have not seen yet. I’m sure Games Workshop is very aware of the negative feedback that the reveal has generated. If there ARE better looking options in the kit I’m sure they will be unveiling them soon.
What are your thoughts on the latest 11th edition model reveal? Too plain or just right?
