Flames of War Early War Starter Sets: Maginot Line and Dunkirk

Early War is where big ideas meet thin armor and bold moves. So, starter sets are the fastest on ramp to rolling dice.

Likewise, these boxes get two commanders playing quickly. However, they also build a solid core for future lists. In other words, you get a real game night in one purchase.

Maginot Line: German vs French armor clash

This box throws you into the Battle for France with two doctrines. On one side, German panzers push tempo with coordinated tank play. Meanwhile, French armor and infantry try to hold ground and punish mistakes. Consequently, it feels like maneuver versus resilience from turn one.

The German force is tank heavy and direct. It includes a Panzer III command tank, plus three Panzer III and three Panzer II tanks. It also adds two 3.7cm guns for extra bite.

The French force hits back with thicker armor. You get five Somua S35 tanks and three Hotchkiss H39 tanks. You also get five infantry teams and a VB rifle grenade team. Therefore, you can screen, counterpunch, and still contest objectives.

Dunkirk: German vs British combined arms

If you love combined arms, this one is the spicy pick. British cruisers and riflemen want to keep moving and trade up. However, the Germans answer with veteran infantry and StuG assault guns. So, every turn becomes a timing puzzle for your anti tank tools.

The British force brings speed and bodies. You get five A13 tanks and three Light Mk VI tanks. You also get two 2 pdr teams, plus seven infantry teams. Finally, you add a Boys anti tank rifle and a 2 inch mortar team.

The German force leans into infantry support and hard hitters. You get four command teams and six infantry teams. You also get a 5cm mortar team and an anti tank rifle team. Then, two StuG assault guns anchor the punch.

Summary

Both boxes include an A5 rulebook, a quick start guide, 11 unit cards, and 10 dice. Therefore, you can set up fast and start learning by doing. Moreover, Maginot Line is cleaner for armored duels, while Dunkirk offers more layered decisions. As a result, pick the style you like and start building outward.
