Warhammer The Old World Update: Clarifications, Cathay Tweaks, and Point Tuning

A new year means The Old World gets its next major balance pass, and there has been a lot happening lately.

So the studio pulled in their Warhammer Studio Regiment to walk through the changes. And since releases have been stacked, this update is more about tightening bolts than rebuilding the engine. In other words, expect answers, clarifications, and targeted adjustments.

Why Another Errata and FAQ, and What It Tries to Do

It has been a few months since the Matched Play Guide and the 1.5 errata and FAQ dropped. Since then, Grand Cathay arrived as a full faction, and Arcane Journals also landed with The War of Settra’s Fury and The Razing of Westerland. So the studio got a pile of questions by email, and they are issuing another update to address the most urgent ones. Some questions missed the cutoff, yet they plan to cover them in the next update later this year. They are also still taking emails at OldWorldFAQ@gwplc.com.

Grand Cathay Adjustments and Broader Balance Tweaks

They intentionally avoided big sweeping revisions, because players are still adapting to the last major changes. Instead, they focused on clarifying confusing areas in core rules and across armies. Grand Cathay gets special attention based on feedback, including how the Ogre Loader works when attached to a war machine. They also tweak points and effects for some magic items. Sky Lanterns take a meaningful hit too, because their Toughness is reduced, and the Commander is demoted from champion to crew. So the model is less oddly protected when the Commander is dragged into a challenge.

Elsewhere, multiple profiles and points values get adjusted across factions. Empire Priests of Sigmar and Ulric get better Leadership, so they lead better and chant prayers more reliably. And going forward, the studio plans continued tuning through points, characteristics, or special rule changes, guided by feedback and real games.

Summary

This update is a cleanup and tuning pass, not a new edition moment. It answers pressing rules questions, reins in a few Cathay pressure points, and nudges several armies through profile and points changes. And because they want steady balance over time, they are asking players to keep sending questions and keep playing. Download the new documents, and then get back to forming ranks in the World of Legend.
