Horus Heresy FAQ 1.1: Tiny Fixes, Big Impact

The Age of Darkness is a chunky game. It has aircraft, psychic weirdness, template weapons, and Legiones Astartes snowflake rules that all want to talk at once.

So it is not shocking that once everyone got third edition to the table, a few rules started rubbing together in odd ways. Because of that, the studio has dropped a fresh round of FAQs, errata, and legacy updates to line everything back up. This one is mostly tidy housekeeping, yet it actually hits a lot of places you will feel in play.

What the New FAQ Actually Fixes

The first slice of the update looks at awkward rules interactions that people kept asking about. Most of it circles around Vanguard (X), aftermath options, and what happens when vehicles shoot during Reactions. The designers have now nailed down how Vanguard (X) should interact with certain situations, which means those pre game style moves will be more predictable. Additionally, they have made it clear that Reactions which cause Glancing Hits do not get to apply Tactical Statuses. That is important because some players were trying to sneak extra effects in off defensive fire. Now the answer is no.

There is also clarification on when you are allowed to pick specific aftermath options. This matters for players who chain abilities after combat and want to squeeze every inch of movement. Because the FAQ spells it out, you will have fewer arguments about order of operations. Consequently, this should make events and league nights run smoother.

Core Rulebook Errata You Should Not Skip

The errata to the main book is not flashy, but it is practical. Flyer mechanics have been tightened so they match how the edition actually plays now. Moreover, models with the Paragon Type got a clarified wound allocation section so you cannot rules lawyer around them. Psychic Curses have been reworked to use Resistance Checks instead of Manifestation Checks. That is a quiet but meaningful shift, since it standardises how those powers sit beside the rest of the psychic system. The Template Special Rule also now tells you exactly how far you can reach when you use the Hellstorm template. Because of that, template users will not be guessing or reaching for old PDFs.

Liber Fixes and Astartes Quality of Life

The individual Libers all get touched so they match the new psychic approach. Curses use Resistance Checks, so everyone is speaking the same rules language. The coolest little change is that Legiones Astartes Moritats now have Bitter Duty. That finally lets them join Destroyer units like everyone secretly wanted. Liber Auxilia gets its Fire Support! Advanced Reaction tweaked so it does what the writer clearly meant it to do. Additionally, Liber Mechanicum gives the Arcuitor Magisterium more weapon options so the rules stop lagging behind the miniature. That is always good design hygiene.

Legacy Files Get a 1.1 Pass

The studio also used this moment to refresh the Legacies of the Age of Darkness files. The main Legacies document gets tiny quality of life changes such as pistol rule placement and some points adjustments. The Caestus Assault Ram now matches other flyers by having a single Armour Value. Cassian Dracos now has paired Gravis power fists, which better reflects his profile. Moreover, the Moritat Mortalis picks up Bitter Duty to match the change to regular Moritats.

The Talons of the Emperor legacy file is cleaner too. The Magisterium Vexilla is confirmed to affect only enemy units. Constantin Valdor can now correctly hand out extra Reaction Allotment to the controlling player. Additionally, the Vanus Infocyte’s Advanced Reactions are restricted to once per battle so they do not spiral. The Imperialis Militia file gets profile fixes and, more importantly, Provenances of War no longer let you stack Cool to silly levels. Finally, the Legiones Inductii doc has one surgical change. The Salamanders optional Inductii Master now counts as a Sergeant Sub Type. It is small, but it keeps the structure of the list tidy.

Wrapping It Up

So this is one of those updates that looks modest but touches almost everything. Because Flyers, psychic curses, reactions, and legacy units all show up in normal games, you will bump into these changes fast. It also shows the studio is listening to actual table feedback and not just rewriting in a vacuum. Therefore, if you are running Heresy events or building narrative forces with old models, grab the new downloads and update your packets. Then you can get back to what matters, which is blowing holes in traitor lines and arguing about which Legion would have actually won Isstvan if the dice had behaved.
