Can you believe it’s already been 18 months since we returned to the Old World?
Nine factions have re-entered the battle with new Arcane Journals, miniatures, and returning classics — and now, with the arrival of Grand Cathay, an ancient power rises to help hold back the tides of Chaos.
As more generals clash across the lands and the tournament scene continues to thrive, the design team has crafted the Matched Play Guide, a comprehensive resource for anyone running or attending events for Warhammer: The Old World. This guide is designed to support both newcomers organising their first friendly events and hardened veterans of the competitive scene.
Inside, you’ll find core rules for participants, a full guide to organising and managing events, and advice on topics like scoring systems, player pairings, army composition, and even terrain placement. The guide outlines three suggested army formats — Open War, Grand Melee, and Combined Arms — each offering slightly different restrictions on characters and unit selections, letting organisers tailor the experience.
It also introduces six diverse Matched Play scenarios, designed to challenge players’ tactical skills, and includes optional secondary objectives and secret objectives to shake things up further.
For those interested in varied formats, there’s a full section on Doubles Events, offering rules on composition, alliances, and scenario setup, as well as advice for navigating potential rules contradictions. There’s also detailed guidance for Team Events and Escalation Events, where players’ armies grow as the tournament progresses, adding an evolving layer of strategy.
The Warhammer: The Old World – Matched Play Guide is your one-stop resource for competitive and Matched Play in the World of Legend. It’s slated for pre-order soon, arriving as both a softcover book and a digital ePub edition. Best of all, it’ll release alongside a fresh FAQ and errata document delivering targeted updates and improvements to the game — stay tuned for more details soon from the ever-watchful Rules Dragon!
