Wretched mortals, your doom approaches on spectral wings!
The Nighthaunt emerge from the shadow-realms of Shyish to spread terror in Ghyran, and they’re bringing a chilling array of new tools with them. This latest Scourge of Ghyran update features cursed battle formations, malevolent artefacts, and two dread-soaked warscroll rewrites for the Black Coach and Kurdoss Valentian.
Let’s take a lantern-lit walk through this haunted battlefield update with our twitchy guide, Alexious the Lily-livered…
Ghostly Formations to Break the Living’s Will
The Nighthaunt now march with two brand-new battle formations:
- Hungry Nexus gives the Nexus of Grief a cruel new trick—it can move into enemy units, tying them down and cutting them off from command abilities. Free rules for the new Nexus are available online, and its haunted mechanics aren’t exclusive to this formation alone.
- Deathrust Gheists corrode the very armor of their foes just by being nearby, reducing enemy save rolls and weakening your opponent’s frontline before your ghosts strike.
Either formation will sap the courage from even the hardiest generals.
Artefacts of Pure Spite
What’s a Nighthaunt procession without a few cursed relics?
- The Stave of Suffering lets your wizard soak up misery and channel it into arcane wrath.
- The Amulet of Waking Nightmares targets enemy heroes, infecting them with psychic torment—great for distracting ranged units or luring foes out of position.
- The Tombstone of the Penitent adds melee power based on how many terrain pieces your unit is haunting. That’s right—more gravestones, more ghost-punching. RIP and tear.
Warscroll Highlights: Black Coach & Kurdoss Valentian
The Black Coach has evolved into a true battlefield wrecking ball. While it no longer teleports as often, it compensates with brutal impact potential and an eerie new ability: it can become a wizard temporarily, casting spells to confuse, debuff, or annihilate.
As for Kurdoss Valentian, the Craven King? He’s somehow even more resentful. Now he gets bonuses against enemies with lower Control, and while his followers often ignore him, their disobedience leads to chaos—objective theft, command denial, and dramatic hero-slaying. In other words: peak Nighthaunt energy.
Conclusion: A New Reign of Terror Begins
This update gives the Nighthaunt new battlefield control options, offensive power, and some of the most delightfully bitter character mechanics we’ve seen yet. Between spectral terrain manipulation and their flair for torment, these ghosts don’t just haunt the battlefield—they own it.
Next up: the Cities of Sigmar rise. Will steel and discipline stand against spirit and sorrow? Tune in tomorrow to find out.
