Days of Wonder made a name for themselves with titles like Ticket to Ride, Small World and Memoir ’44. Now their popular WW2 tactical game is getting a spiritual successor Let’s take a look!
Richard Borg is a living legend board game designer. If you do not play exclusively GW games, you likely know his name or have come into contact with his legacy. He is perhaps most famous for designing the Commands & Colors wargaming system, which has gone from the American Civil War, to the Ancient World, then Napoleonic Europe, to the Medieval world, and now to a galaxy far, far away.
Strictly speaking, Commands & Colors refers to a series of historical wargames, but Borg has worked on a number of other games that use a modified version of the system, including Memoir ’44, Battlelore, and now Battle of Hoth. The system simplifies battlefield combat somewhat by using a playing board broken into hexes and divided into thirds to create left, right and center sections. Players deploy their forces as described in premade scenarios and are dealt a hand of cards that can be used to move and/or attack with units based on a variety of factors, such as their type and where they are on the board. It is easy to learn yet hard to master, simple while remaining tactically interesting, and, most importantly, loads of fun.
The Battle of Hoth will come with everything needed to play including gameboard and pieces, dice and a rulebook containing seventeen scenarios and two multi-scenario campaigns. A full components list has not yet been revealed but clearly visible in the promotional material are rebel and stormtroopers, AT-ATs, snow speeders and turrets. What do you think, will you be picking this up when it becomes available? Let us know in the comments!
