Hey everyone, Reecius here with my recap of my Adepticon trip.
Adepticon has come and gone and it was another great event. I have not been in years, I didn’t realize how long it had been since the last time I went. I was excited to see old friends and check out the new venue, which I have to say, was really awesome and has so much room to grow. Adepticon was maxed out in the previous location and the Baird Center in Milwaukee will give them tons of runway to include more games, more vendors and more attendees. I really liked the new location a lot. I also have to say, having never been to Milwaukee, it was a really cool city. The architecture was beautiful and the people were super friendly. I really enjoyed it.

I ended up playing way more than I thought I would, although I got my butt kicked quite a bit, haha. I ended up going 1-3 which is certainly not my best outing but I did not expect to do super well being as rusty as I am.
Here’s my list which again I was limited by what I had painted. I was sick as a dog prior to Adepticon so I wasn’t able to get any painting done.

It was a really low scoring game but I was able to squeak ahead on the Secondaries for a very narrow victory. The Squighog Boyz are surprisingly tough, they stick around through a lot of damage and hit really hard. In this game my MSU list was what allowed me to keep sacrificing units to hold back the big units of Orks and stick on objectives and the mobility of my army let me focus on one units at a time. My opponent had basically no shooting which allowed me to move around relatively freely and the Eldar speed made a huge difference. My opponent also got really unlcuky on his Secondaries, he kept drawing cards he couldn’t do much with which allowed me to squeak ahead.
I actually ended up playing with my opponent in the Long War Doubles after the champs. His teammate couldn’t make it so we teamed up and the combo of Eldar shooting and Ork melee worked really well! I will get to that later in this article.
Round 2 Champs
Round 2 I played a really interesting Tyranid list. My opponent Nik has a site called War Academy if anyone wants to check it out and learn more about being a better 40k player.

This was a really fun game, and the surge move of the Carnifxes in the Invasion Fleet was super strong. If you shoot them they move and can move into melee. That caught me by surprise mid game when we started moving into one another. The Fire Dragons, not surprisingly, were my MVPs, smoking big monsters left and right but in this game as in really all of my games, I just struggled to keep up on the primary mission. The MSU Eldar units were great for throwing around the table with Seer Council or reserves generally but they had no staying power for actually holding objectives. Meanwhile, the big TMCs were able to easily sit on objectives and weather the storm. I fell behind on primary while winning on secondary and just didn’t have the ability to shift the big boys before running out of my little 5 man Eldar units. Fun game, I just couldn’t keep up on the attrition battle.

An interesting list and man those tank commanders are mean. With the Enginseers fixing and giving them a 4++ they were really tough. My opponent was a good player and the game was very close until the big push turn when I ran out my Fire Dagons and Wraithlords to try and finish off his remaining tanks and he made every single 4++ on that turn, haha. That took the wind out of my sails but that is how it goes with a dice game. Then I was just standing there and got smoked. Fun game, very bloody, neither of us had much left at the end but a fun game and again, my inability to hold objectives meant I fell behind on the primary while doing well on the secondary due to my army’s crazy mobility. I was able to kill most of my opponent’s army but he played smart and just kept pumping units onto the objectives and I was unable to clear them fast enough. Fun game against a cool list.
Round 4 Champs
My game 4 was very brief, haha. My opponent was playing Grey Knights and a combination of me being tired (4 games is a LOT for one day), still a little sick, having some beers throughout the day (also thanks to everyone that bought me a beer at the event, I appreciate the generosity!) and being a bit demoralized from my performance, when most of his army charged me on turn 2 from reserves I was just like…you win, haha. It was pretty late at that point so I was ready to get something to eat. My opponent was super nice though, and a total gentleman so absolutely no hard feelings. I just didn’t really understand what was going on with his army, it really caught me by surprise. The whole “uppy-downy” thing is totally new to me as it was not in the game when I was playing a lot previously, so it felt really odd. However, it is a part of the game now, so I have to get used to it. In the future I assume you throw units out against an army like Grey Knights to create space but I felt like my army just really didn’t have the tools. The one shot I got with Fire Dragons just bounced off a Dread knight 4++ lol. That is just luck of course but it was rough, I just couldn’t do anything.

So on the whole, I did not perform as well as I wanted to but it was a learning experience. All of my opponents were super cool and had nice looking armies so in total it was a win. It was great to see so many old friends as well, and make some new ones. Also big shout out to Matt Baugh and his crew. They always do a great job and the event was super smooth and professional. 4 games a day is a bit hard but I understand with their time constraints why they do it.
As for my reflections on the experience, I have to say I do not love the 10th ed missions. I don’t hate them at all but the random missions was kind of weird. I am sure you get used to them but even from a thematic point of view why would you send the greatest warriors in the galaxy on a mission you don’t know what it is before hand, lol? Head over that way guys, you’ll figure it out!
Jokes aside though, it felt a bit too random as some rounds you drew great cards and your opponent got cards they couldn’t score, etc. As stated, I am sure with experience you mitigate the randomness but I prefer choosing missions from a list as we did in previous editions. I feel it helps incentivize more balanced lists as well if you knew your opponent could take a mission that countered a skew list that was all tanks or whatever.

Having to stand on an objective for a turn was tough, I can see why so many armies are comprised of monsters and vehicles this edition. Things die so quickly now it was really a struggle to hold objectives for my largely infantry based army. Even my Wraithlords, which did really well for me this event, would be lucky to last 1 turn of being exposed to fire. It’s like if you poke your head out in 10th, you die if you don’t kill whatever can see you first.
The Warp Spiders did work every game, and despite only being strength 4 actually killed a lot of stuff. I would happily take another unit. The Fire Dragons were my best units for sure and in Seer Council being able to teleport them up to shoot big units, or just their natural Eldar speed with Battle Focus meant the 5 man units were actually quite threatening even from outside of melta range.
I think if I had some transports like Wave Serpents it would have been a lot easier to actually hold objectives. Had I not been so sick prior to the tournament I would have gotten a few painted but it wasn’t in the cards this time. But if I can figure out how to actually stick to objectives with Eldar I think you can do really well, they don’t have issues killing stuff and the mobility was awesome, I had a lot of fun with units flying all over the table.
Also I had 1 Character haha, it was good for some secondaries but I practiced with Asurman and Feugan, it would have been nice to have them as they do serious work! Oh well, it will be good to have them next time. Plus, the new Phoenix Lord models are so sick, I am looking forward to adding them.

Long War Doubles Event
As I stated, my first opponent in the champs needed a teammate so I jumped in and played in the doubles. It was a fun event and all the teams we played were super cool. Big shout to the Long War crew, they did a great job with the event and I totally recommend it to anyone considering playing!
The combo of tough Ork units and mobile, shooty Eldar worked really well. Our first opponents had a really similar construction with World Eaters and Eldar. I thought we might be cooked when they charged us turn 2 but the Orks were able to soak the big assaults with sacrificial Orks. When we made our counter punch the dice gods were with us. The Dragons killed Angron and the Squighog Boys were able to take out the the other key threats. After that my little units were able to fly up the table and jump on objectives while the Orks held down the middle. Really fun game, lots of stuff died and both of our opponents had gorgeous armies.
Round 2 we played a fun CSM combo of Alpha Legion and the Raiders detachment. It was an interesting game as they had so many reserves and infiltrating units. We got lucky getting first turn or I think the game could have gone their way quite easily as we would have been boxed in by about 60 infiltrating Cultists. It would have made it way easier for our opponents to bring in their tanks from reserves as with us going first, we were able to screen out a big chunk of the board. I also came to see why the Chaos Vindicator is so feared, that things does work. We had a good game, our opponents were very fun to play but the combo of tough Orks taking objectives and Eldar firepower had the tools and we squeaked out a win.
Round 3 we played a really nasty Custodes/Grey Knight combo, and both opponents were very good players. This one we got rocked pretty hard, the teleporting GK got me again! I got a little demoralized in this game as I was having flashbacks from day 1, haha, Grey Knights in the trees!!

So I just wanted to offer an apology for that one as our opponents were super nice. I got a little salty and it wasn’t called for as they were gracious opponents. As for the game itself, man, those units charging you basically from the other side of the table is tough to deal with. I think I needed more screens or something. I will have to learn how to deal with that as I got creamed by it twice.
In all it made me realize how much I needed some tough units to go up the middle. I am not really sure what I could use, my Wraithlords did well, particularly with Guide from the Farseer getting them up to hitting on 2’s in many cases, and were the toughest units in my list but as I stated, they still went down quick when targeted. My thought is maybe using transports to jump on Objectives, use the JSJ tricks with Eldar to keep the units inside safe, and then if the transport pops, the guys inside jump out onto the objectives? Not really sure honestly as that was by far the biggest weakness for me during the event.
Overall, a fun event and I 100% recommend going to Adepticon for anyone considering it.
