The Perry Twins are back with a new set of plastic miniatures for their Franco-Prussian War range. Let’s take a look!
Those marvelous miniature maniacs, Michael and Allan Perry have made another plastic kit for their Franco-Prussian War range, this time featuring Bavarian infantry. The box will come with 36 miniatures, including 24 line infantry in various poses, 8 Jäger/Schützen (sharpshooters/skirmishers) and 4 command. All minis can be assembled with forage caps or helmets with horse hair plumes, which the Bavarians have favored since the Napoleonic wars. The kit is meant to represent Bavarian Infantry from 1870-71 in the Franco-Prussian War, but in the words of the Perry Twins: “they also fought the Prussians four years earlier in the same uniforms and equipment, if you are willing to overlook minor differences on the rifle breeches.”
The Franco-Prussian war was a short, bloody conflict in which the Prussians took out generations of frustration on the French half a century after Napoleon’s death. The Prussians took the strategically important province of Alsace-Lorraine and celebrated their victory in one of history’s greatest power moves, announcing the formation of the German Empire in Versailles. Unfortunately, this all set the stage for The War to End All Wars (Part 1).
From a wargaming perspective, the Franco-Prussian War is really interesting for a number of reasons. The Armies are fighting with technology that was just starting to roll out at the end of the American Civil War. European generals had watched in fascination as all sorts of new military technology had taken the field in the United States just half a decade earlier. The infantry were all using breach loading rifles, the French Chassepot and German Dreyse Needle Gun (any 2nd edition 40K players in the house?). Prussians and Frenchmen had embedded with both Union and Confederate forces and studied the conflict closely. The Prussians developed a number of steel, breach loading canon that proved decisive in the conflict. And in true European fashion, the uniforms were still, well, pretty uniform and colorful!
