The Astra Militarum is a vast and varied force, drawing regiments from countless worlds, each with its own unique approach to warfare.
The newly released Codex: Astra Militarum introduces some exciting changes to three of the most iconic regiments—the Cadian Shock Troops, Death Korps of Krieg, and Catachan Jungle Fighters—with updated core infantry rules that bring new strategic depth to each.
New Infantry Options and Synergies
One of the biggest updates in this codex is the introduction of new datasheets for infantry squads, heavy weapons teams, and command squads. These updated rules allow for more tactical flexibility, letting players fine-tune their armies and create synergies between different units.
- Infantry Squads now have individual loadout options and specific rules, allowing you to tailor each unit to your strategy, whether it’s bringing massive firepower or providing a sturdy defensive position.
- Heavy Weapons Squads and Command Squads have been given more opportunities to shine with new abilities that allow for even greater strategic options.
Regiment-Specific Rules
Each of the regiments featured in the Codex: Astra Militarum plays a little differently under these new rules, giving you the chance to really dive into the tactics that make each of these factions unique:
- Cadian Shock Troops: The iconic Cadians get their own Cadian Command Squad with the Cadia Stands! rule, which grants a Benefit of Cover against ranged attacks as long as an officer is alive. Pair this with Covering Fire from the Cadian Heavy Weapons Squad, which allows Overwatch attacks to hit on unmodified 4+ rolls when within 6” of a friendly Platoon unit, and you’ve got a resilient and deadly defensive position that can hold objectives against all odds. It’s a great way to set up a formidable firebase.
- Death Korps of Krieg: The Death Korps remain as grim and determined as ever. Their Heavy Weapons Squads provide direct fire support and are perfect for Final Duty—fighting to the very last with devastating last-salvo strikes. The Krieg Command Squads embody the regiment’s Grim Determination, helping to issue orders even when the unit is Battle-shocked, ensuring they never stop fighting.
- Catachan Jungle Fighters: Known for their guerilla tactics and survival skills on hostile worlds, the Catachans are more deadly than ever. The Catachan Command Squad gets the Gung-ho Command, which grants all ranged weapons in the squad the Assault keyword, letting them keep the pressure on even when they’re on the move. Their Bring it Down! Stratagem makes their Heavy Weapon Squads lethal against monsters and vehicles, with re-rolls to hit and wound rolls of 1, ensuring they bring down even the biggest targets.
Synergies and Strategies for Astra Militarum
Using these units in unison gives the Astra Militarum a fighting chance against superhuman foes, powerful xenos, and ancient machines of war. A well-coordinated Astra Militarum force can punch above its weight and stand firm against overwhelming odds. As any Commissar worth his salt would tell you, the Imperium is never short on offensive capability—especially when you have access to these new, upgraded options.
Rogal Dorn Tank Commanders and Detachments
In addition to new infantry rules, Codex: Astra Militarum brings a host of fresh Detachments and the option to take Rogal Dorn Tank Commanders, adding even more tactical flexibility and devastating firepower to your force. Whether you prefer the massive power of a tank commander or the strategic flexibility of a combined-arms force, these new additions will let you tailor your army for every battlefield.
The Future of Astra Militarum
With Codex: Astra Militarum providing these new rules and opportunities, there’s a lot to explore in terms of army composition and strategy. The Death Korps of Krieg Army Set will also be available for pre-order soon, which means there’s no better time to dive into the updated Astra Militarum force and plan your next big campaign.
Remember, the generic Platoon Command Squad and Platoon Infantry Squad datasheets have been removed, but there’s nothing stopping you from using one of the three regiment archetypes for your own infantry. So, if your Mordians happen to resemble the Cadians or Death Korps, feel free to mix and match these regimental flavors to suit your army’s narrative and tactical needs.
Prepare for the new era of Astra Militarum tactics—your enemies won’t know what hit them!
