The Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector – Astra Militarum DLC aims to introduce the formidable Imperial Guard to the battlefield, but its execution may leave some longtime fans wanting.
While it’s certainly exciting to see Leman Russ tanks and disciplined infantry squads march forth under the Emperor’s banner, the overall additions feel somewhat limited compared to the lofty expectations set by the Warhammer 40K universe.
On the surface, the new units—complete with turrets, sponsons, and classic lasguns—are an appealing nod to the Astra Militarum’s rich lore. However, the DLC’s implementation sometimes falls short when it comes to deeper tactical variety. Infantry platoons can appear redundant in certain missions, and the synergy between artillery, armor, and foot soldiers lacks the satisfying punch that players might hope for. This is particularly noticeable in extended campaigns, where battles can start to feel repetitive rather than epic.
Commissars and their morale-boosting effects bring a faithful touch to the Guard’s uncompromising discipline, yet their impact on gameplay can be underwhelming. The potential for dramatic leadership moments—iconic in lore—ends up feeling more like an incremental bonus than a game-changer. Furthermore, the DLC’s AI does not consistently capitalize on the new tools, leaving some encounters feeling too predictable.
Despite these drawbacks, dedicated fans of the 41st Millennium may still find value in commanding the Astra Militarum’s iconic war machines, if only for the immersive thrill of fielding the hammer of the Imperium. Nevertheless, newcomers and skeptical veterans might question whether this DLC truly delivers the depth expected from one of Warhammer 40K’s most beloved factions.
