Re-Writing the Rivals Decks for Warhammer Underworlds!

The upcoming Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard edition introduces a streamlined and refined gameplay experience, making it more accessible to both new and veteran players. A major highlight of this new edition is the introduction of four distinct archetypes for Rivals Decks and warbands, ensuring that players can better understand and strategize with their chosen warbands. This removes much of the guesswork and allows players of all levels to jump into the action more confidently.

The Four Playstyles:

  1. Strike – Focuses on aggressive combat and direct attacks.
  2. Take and Hold – Emphasizes battlefield control, securing and holding objectives.
  3. Mastery – Brings in unique mechanics with complex, strategic play.
  4. Flex – A balanced approach, mixing elements of combat and control.

Each archetype comes with a dedicated deck in the Embergard box, giving players multiple options regardless of the warband they choose. Here’s a breakdown of how these archetypes work:

Strike: Bold, aggressive, and focused on combat

The Blazing Assault deck revolves around getting your fighters into combat quickly and decisively. Cards like Determined Effort boost attacks, while Sidestep provides tactical movement. Scoring in this deck hinges on defeating enemies, with objectives like Branching Fate and Strike the Head rewarding a proactive approach. The ultimate goal is total Annihilation of the enemy.

Take and Hold: Control the battlefield and objectives

The Emberstone Sentinels deck is all about controlling territory, particularly treasure tokens. Players are encouraged to claim tokens in both friendly and enemy territory, with cards like Switch Things Up allowing manipulation of token positions and The Extra Mile enabling faster movement.

Scoring is focused on dominating objectives with cards like Careful Advance and Iron Grasp, rewarding methodical, territorial control.

Mastery: Unique mechanics and intricate strategy

The Countdown to Cataclysm deck introduces complex mechanics, including a Plot card that increases a special Cataclysm value. This value rises as you deny enemies treasure tokens and sacrifice your own fighters strategically.

Cards like Sunder the Realm and The End is Nigh become more powerful as your Cataclysm value increases, but they come with risks. Proper use of these mechanics is essential for survival and success.

Flex: A balanced approach to combat and control

The Pillage and Plunder deck requires a flexible playstyle, using the Delve ability to flip treasure tokens and switch between offense and defense. Cards like Explosive Charges and Frenzy of Greed support your fighters while they fight for objectives.

You’ll need to handle incoming attacks and secure treasure tokens to score objectives like Desolate Homeland and Claim the Prize, ultimately aiming to Strip the Realm.

Warband Compatibility and Customization

While each warband has its own inherent playstyle, the decks themselves are interchangeable, meaning you can mix and match decks and warbands to create interesting combinations. The Zikkit’s Tunnelpack (Skaven) and Emberwatch (Stormcast Eternals) warbands are both considered Flex warbands, meaning they can adapt well to any deck in the Embergard box. Additionally, each warband’s unique warscroll adds a twist to how they interact with any deck, providing endless replayability.

Nemesis Deck-Building

For players who enjoy customizing their decks, Nemesis deck-building will return in this edition, with detailed rules provided in the new rulebook. This allows for a deeper level of strategy and deck crafting, offering a variety of ways to engage with the game. More details on this will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

With these new changes, Warhammer Underworlds promises to deliver a more dynamic, enjoyable, and strategic experience, giving players the tools they need to excel at every level of play. Stay tuned for the roadmap, which will outline future releases and expansions for the launch year!
