Nick, a dedicated Warhammer Underworlds player and Warhammer+ presenter, shares his top 10 favorite changes in the new edition of Warhammer Underworlds, providing insight from a seasoned veteran who’s been part of the community since the game launched in 2017. Here’s what he’s excited about:
1. Everything is Accessible
Gone are the days of hunting down rare warbands or cards. Now, only what’s available for purchase can be used in events, making the game more accessible and fair for everyone.
2. Warscrolls and New Cards
The new Warscrolls replace the old faction decks, offering easy-to-read, once-per-game abilities that add character and strategy to each warband. Plus, the new vibrant card designs make the game visually stunning!
3. Simplified Rules
Warhammer Underworlds has a much leaner rulebook in this edition, making it easier for new players to jump in without the complexity of long rules and FAQs. This streamlined approach expands the community while maintaining the depth veteran players expect.
4. Defined Warbands and Decks
Warbands are now categorized by clear playstyles: Strike, Take and Hold, Mastery, and Flex, making it easier for players to choose warbands and decks that fit their strategy right from the start.
5. Balanced Game with Less Bloat
While it’s sad for long-time collectors to see old cards go, the game needed a refresh. Reducing the overwhelming number of warbands and cards will keep the game exciting and balanced, making it more approachable for newcomers and veterans alike.
6. No More Longboarding
Passive warbands could previously set up the boards to delay combat, but the new boards encourage faster, more direct engagements, ensuring more exciting battles right from the start.
7. Bounty and Upgrade Costs
Now, the Bounty earned from defeating fighters varies based on the fighter’s power, and upgrades have more nuanced costs. Stronger upgrades may cost more, but there are also upgrades that cost no Glory at all, adding strategic depth.
8. The Focus Ability
The Focus ability fixes frustrating moments when you’re stuck with useless cards. Now, you can discard and redraw multiple cards, giving you more flexibility and keeping the game fun even when your hand isn’t ideal.
9. Reusable Glory
Instead of spending Glory Points, you now simply need to have enough to equip upgrades. If a fighter dies, their upgrades are discarded, freeing up Glory to spend on others—making your upgrades more dynamic and strategic.
10. Balanced Crits
Crits are still powerful, but they no longer override all other successes. This change adds more balance to the game and reduces frustrating moments where lucky crit rolls could completely disrupt well-planned strategies.
