Breaking Down the Big Changes Coming to Underworlds!

Alright, fellow Warhammer Underworlds players, buckle up because the new edition of the game is almost here, and it’s bringing some pretty exciting changes! We’re heading into Embergard soon, and as always, it’s going to be a dice-rolling, deck-building good time, but with some awesome new twists.

What’s Staying the Same

If you’ve played Warhammer Underworlds before, don’t worry—the core experience is still intact. You’re still slinging dice and flipping cards to outmaneuver your opponent, but they’ve made some cool tweaks to streamline and spice things up.

Previously, each warband was defined by their Fighter Cards and a deck of Ploys, Upgrades, and Objectives unique to them. That’s now changed. While Fighter Cards are still there (and you’ll still flip them when your fighters inspire), the decks are now universal. But don’t panic! Your warband’s unique flavor is preserved through something called Warband Warscrolls. These Warscrolls keep your special abilities intact, no matter which deck you’re using. So, you get more flexibility in deck-building without losing that distinct feel of your warband.

New Mechanics: Bounty and Abilities

Each fighter now has a Bounty stat—basically, the Glory you score when you take them down. So, killing your opponent’s biggest hitter feels even better when you rake in the extra Glory! Warband abilities are also fresh on the block, like “Alone I Stand!” for the Emberwatch. Some of these abilities trigger every round, while others are powerful, one-shot effects with specific triggers. There’s also a new icon system marking certain abilities as Surge abilities, meaning they fire off the moment their conditions are met.

Oh, and if you’re a fan of Skaven (who isn’t?), the Tunnelpack is all about risky plays—blowing themselves up with warp-charged power. It’s exactly the chaotic Skaven flavor we love, where you might win big or lose spectacularly!

Core Actions and Focus

The core actions like Move, Attack, Charge, and Guard are all still around, but now there’s a fresh action called Focus. This new mechanic is a lifesaver when you’re stuck with a “bricked hand” (i.e., nothing useful to play). By using Focus, you can ditch some cards and draw replacements, plus an extra Power card. But don’t go overboard—using Focus too much will drain your Power Cards and Glory, leaving you stuck when you need them the most.

Critical Hits Get a Makeover

If you’ve ever been burned by your opponent rolling one lucky Critical that nullifies all your hard-earned successes, you’re going to love this change. Now, Critical hits are just another success, not an automatic cancel-out of everything else. They still have a purpose, though—they can trigger special weapon abilities and the new Overrun and Stand Fast mechanics, giving you more tactical options.

Underdog Rule

Ever felt like you’re trailing and just can’t catch a break? Enter the Underdog mechanic. Borrowed from Warhammer Age of Sigmar, it gives the player with fewer Glory points some advantages—like winning ties for first-turn rolls or using abilities that only the Underdog can activate. There’s even a healing buff with the Healing Potion Ploy or the sneaky redeploy move with Hidden Paths. So, if you’re behind, you’re not out—you’ve got extra tools to claw your way back.

Less is More: The One-Board Change

Here’s a big one: no more two boards. The game is now fought on a single board, which means quicker action and less setup time. You’ll get stuck into the fight faster, and there’s less stuff to lug around when heading to games. The boards are still double-sided, so you’ll have variety, and the rules even pre-determine which layouts to use, making setup super easy.

Streamlined Rules and Game Language

Warhammer Underworlds has had some pretty complex terminology in the past, but the new edition is trimming down the fat. Uncommon mechanics like Barge and Magic dice have been scrapped or rolled into warband-specific abilities. Plus, the rulebook is now a slim 16 pages instead of a bloated 50! This makes the game much easier to learn, teach, and play. So whether you’re a veteran or a newbie, you’ll spend less time flicking through the rulebook and more time actually playing.

Final Thoughts

With the changes to Warhammer Underworlds, it feels like the game is more streamlined, tactical, and fun than ever. There’s less clutter, fewer niche rules, and a lot more focus on making each warband feel unique while keeping the game fast and brutal. Whether you’re a die-hard Underworlds player or someone looking to dive into the game for the first time, this edition is shaping up to be the best one yet.

And if you’re dying to see the game in action before it drops, make sure you check out the live stream this Friday. There’ll be live matches broadcasted straight from Warhammer HQ, so you can get a feel for the new mechanics before the dice hit the table.
