From Weapon X to Wolverine: The Evolution of a Living Weapon

Before he became the iconic superhero Wolverine, Logan was known as Weapon X, a product of the shadowy Weapon X Program.

This covert operation aimed to create super soldiers, manipulating their minds and memories to forge unwaveringly loyal warriors. When the program’s initial experiments succeeded, the scientists set their sights on Logan. They bonded his skeleton with indestructible adamantium, intending to craft an unstoppable, programmable killing machine. With his extraordinary healing ability and unbreakable skeleton, Weapon X was envisioned as the ultimate high-risk operative. However, the creators didn’t anticipate losing control over their creation, resulting in a ferocious, enraged warrior with no memories to temper his fury. Weapon X broke free, paving the way for Logan’s journey to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and his transformation into Wolverine.

Unleashing the Berserker: Wolverine in Action

Wolverine, as Weapon X, is all about doing what he does best— and it’s not very nice! Berserker Rage grants him an extra die when he targets an enemy for a second time, and with Pierce, he can deal more damage than his strength 5 attack would suggest. When Wolverine accumulates 4 Power, he can unleash his Uncontrollable Weapon attack, rolling 7 dice and potentially damaging all characters within range 2. He might even get a second free Uncontrollable Weapon attack on the same target. But be careful— you’ll want to use Charge to reposition first, to avoid harming too many allies.

Weapon X’s new Adamantium Skeleton makes him count as size 3 for effects like Throws or Pushes, and Healing Factor [3] ensures he’s tough to take down unless your opponent fully commits. However, Savagery Protocols prevent him from influencing Extract tokens, sharpening his focus on Secure Tokens. While within range 1, Weapon X gains 2 attack dice but loses 1 defense die, honing in on his singular goal: eliminating his enemies.

The Beast Within: Weapon X Under Pressure

As Weapon X becomes injured, he transforms into an even greater threat—both to his enemies and his allies. The first change is Berserker Rage becoming A2. With Charge, this forces opponents to either spread out or face the wrath of an enraged Weapon X.

When wounded, he trades Savagery Protocols for Berserker Wrath, maintaining his inability to control Extract tokens while losing his ability to influence Secure objective tokens. He also gains Aimless Aggression, a unique ability that lets him potentially damage all characters within range 2 when he’s KO’d. Pushing Weapon X into the fray makes opponents think twice before attacking, knowing they could trigger a brutal counterattack.

Maverick: The Mercenary with a Mission

Christoph Nord, better known as Maverick, is another product of the Weapon X Program and a formidable mercenary. With access to advanced weaponry and combat experience, Maverick is a dangerous adversary for anyone in his path. His Plasma Blasters and Adamantium Knife offer powerful energy and physical attacks, while his Agent Zero Attack rolls 7 dice and can Throw an enemy character of size 3 or less.

Maverick’s Anti-Healing Factor Corrosive is a nasty surprise lifted from the Weapon X Program, allowing him to stop a nearby character from healing any damage. Additionally, he has Kinetic Energy Absorption, giving him 1 Power and a short advance in any direction after taking damage from a physical attack.

The Dynamic Duo: Weapon X and Maverick in Your Squad

Representing their time in the Weapon X Program, Weapon X and Maverick come with two dynamic options for your Weapon X squads. Implanted Memories allows an allied Weapon X character to retaliate and damage an enemy after being affected by an enemy’s effect. The best part? This doesn’t have to be an attack—so they can strike back at Magneto after one of his many throws!

Alongside this, Maverick’s Weapons Stash showcases how this mercenary is always prepared for any job. Maverick can spend 3 Power to place a Stash, giving allied characters cover or removing the token to gain 2 extra dice on their next attack. Whatever illicit arsenal he has in that crate is sure to level the playing field!
