Why The Van Saar Tek-hunters Risk Hive Secundus

Hey Necromunda fans! We’re diving deep into the final article on the Hive Secundus box set, focusing on the elite Van Saar Tek-hunters. These brave adventurers are dispatched by the elders of House Van Saar to scour Hive Secundus for valuable archaeotech and crucial knowledge that could save their house from the slow death caused by radiation from their own tech. Let’s hear what the Necromunda design team has to say!

Who are the Tek-hunters?

The Tek-hunters are young, daring members of House Van Saar who volunteer to venture into the hazardous depths of Hive Secundus. Their mission is clear: find anything that can help repair the damaged Van Saar Standard Template Construct (STC) and save their house from the deadly radiation that their tech emits. This perilous journey into Genestealer-infested ruins is a one-way trip for most, but it’s a sacrifice they’re willing to make for the greater good of their clan.

Unique Campaign Features

In the Hive Secundus box set campaign, the Tek-hunters have some exclusive options usually unavailable without visiting a Rogue Doc or the Trading Post. For instance, the Bioteknist can heal injured teammates during downtime. These actions are specific to this campaign, but the Tek-hunters also have access to unique wargear only they can use, like the Refraction Cloak, which makes them harder to spot, or the Servo-Medicae for healing.

Flexible Specialists

The Tek-hunters are Specialists, meaning you get to decide how to spend their XP. In gang creation, you can have a Leader and an entire team of Tek-hunters. They aren’t Champions, but they’re skilled enough for you to customize their growth.

Why Van Saar?

Van Saar was the perfect fit for the Hive Secundus box because they have the most at stake and the strongest reason to venture into the dangerous hive. They’re desperate to gather any tech and information to survive, making them the ideal incursion gang.

New Kit Design

The design team created a new kit for the Van Saar to explore Hive Secundus. They look like heroes ready to delve into a dungeon, with two builds for each: a standard ganger and a specialized Tek-hunter equipped with top-tier gear. You get a medic, a gunner, a sniper, and a comms guy – all looking the part.

Weapon Evolution

The team had clear ideas from the start on how to evolve Van Saar’s regular equipment. They’ve expanded the Van Saar design language vertically, refining and evolving their core equipment without creating new shapes. The suits remain the same but cooler to express individuality. The sniper, for example, looks like an elite operator – and honestly, they all do.

Compatibility and Customization

The team aimed to keep the new kit fittings compatible with existing ones, though some poses might not fit every arm or gun. Most of the range will be compatible, including all the heads. It feels akin to Kill Team – a customizable gang of elite infiltrators with specialized skills, making the game feel cinematic, like a squad of soldiers cut off from the world, fighting to survive.

Future Plans

After the release of the Hive Secundus box set, the Book of Desolation will follow. But that’s not all – Hive Secundus is a new setting for Necromunda with plans to expand existing gangs, add new ones, and explore other areas of the planet.
