AoS 4th Ed. – Soulblight Preview!

Hey there, fellow gamers! If you’re as stoked as I am about the dark and brooding world of the Soulblight Gravelords in the Age of Sigmar, then buckle up, because this deep dive into Nagash’s undead legions is going to be a ride!

Meet the Soulblight Gravelords

In his eternal quest for dominance, Nagash has summoned the Soulblight Gravelords to his side. These vampires aren’t just your run-of-the-mill bloodsuckers; they bring a terrifying mix of bloodthirst, dark magic, and cunning influence to the battlefield. Imagine commanding hordes of undead minions, all in service to the Great Necromancer himself.

The Birth of Vampires

Vampires in the Mortal Realms were created by Nagash, the God of Undeath. Rising from the depths of Shyish, Nagash’s first move was to raise undead allies to conquer the underworlds. Among his top commanders, the Mortarchs, were the first vampires: Mannfred von Carstein, Neferata, and Ushoran.

Vampiric Powers and the Curse

These ancient vampires bestowed the blood kiss upon mortals, turning them into supernaturally powerful beings with incredible speed, strength, and magical abilities. But, as with all things necromantic, this power comes with a price. The Soulblight curse fuels an insatiable hunger for blood, pushing these vampires to the brink of losing their humanity.

Eternal Conquerors

Whether they give in to their bloodlust and become monstrous nightmares or maintain their noble facade, all vampires are driven to dominate and subjugate the living. They use their necromantic powers to raise undead armies and carve out empires, playing into Nagash’s grand schemes despite their own ambitions and plots.

Key Players: Neferata and Mannfred

Neferata and Mannfred are top-tier lieutenants of Nagash, ruling the Legion of Blood and Legion of Night, respectively. Mannfred is a tactical genius, leading elite warriors and secretly dabbling in necromantic studies to free himself from Nagash’s grip. Neferata, meanwhile, excels in military displays and courtly intrigue, constantly scheming to maintain her power.

The Dynasties

The Soulblight Gravelords are divided into various dynasties, each with its own flavor and hierarchy. From the Vyrkos, with their lycanthropic vampire leaders and packs of Dire Wolves, to the monstrous Avengorii, who embrace the full horror of the Soulblight curse, to the martial Kastelai Blood Knights, each dynasty brings unique strengths to Nagash’s cause.

Necromantic Powers and Battle Traits

Soulblight Gravelords use dark magic to raise the dead and bolster their armies. Their battle traits allow them to reanimate fallen troops, creating an endless tide of undead that can overwhelm their enemies. Even damaged units can be restored with the Deathly Invocation ability, and vampire lords can feast on the blood of their foes to heal themselves.

Battle Formations

The Gravelords can field a variety of formations to suit their strategies. The Deathmarch is a relentless horde of skeletons that crush everything in their path. Spellcaster convocations use forbidden magic to enhance their powers, while vampire-led war parties devastate their foes with a mix of spellcasting and combat prowess.

Arcana and Incantations

Gravelord wizards wield the Lore of Undeath, casting spells like Vile Transference to drain life from enemies and heal themselves. Other spells can immobilize foes or cause their flesh to wither away, making them easy prey for the undead.

Spotlight on Units

Radukar the Beast: This warlord turned monstrous brute leads the Vyrkos with ferocious strength. His Call to the Hunt inspires his minions to kill relentlessly.

Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares: A terrifying example of the Soulblight curse’s effects, her many-limbed form and impaling talons wreak havoc on the battlefield.

Blood Knights: These elite cavalry units trample enemies underfoot with their Riders of Ruin ability, carving a path through infantry and targeting high-value foes.

Vargheists: Vampires who have succumbed to their basest urges, these winged horrors launch deadly attacks from the sky, instilling fear in their enemies.

The Bloodcrave Hunt is a special formation led by Vampire Lords, featuring Deathrattle Skeletons and powerful units like Vargheists. These hunts are not just about winning—they’re about the thrill of the chase, satisfying the vampires’ bloodlust. The Skeleton Legion is particularly brutal, cutting down foes with ancient weapons and being replenished by death magic.

Final Thoughts

The Soulblight Gravelords are a formidable force in Age of Sigmar, blending necromantic might with the terrifying prowess of vampires. Whether you’re commanding endless hordes of undead or leading elite vampire units, the Gravelords offer a versatile and deadly army. Prepare to dominate the Mortal Realms and let the bloodshed begin!
